Pascal Aufranc
Housed in an old farmhouse in the commune of Chénas, Pascal Aufranc began in 1993 on a hillside vineyard planted with Gamay, overlooking the village of Chénas, on the hill named "En Rémont".
Little by little, he expanded with the acquisition of new vines in the Juliénas appellation, and today works 11 hectares. He offers three cuvées, all red wines, which are regularly rewarded: Chénas Vignes de 1939, Juliénas Les Cerisiers and his grand cuvée Juliénas Probus.
Respectful of the environment around him, Pascal Aufranc relies on patience and observation to make the best choices in the vineyard. He prefers to manage his vineyards using the "lutte raisonnée" method, and wants to give nature its due, so as to allow the best of the terroir to express itself, and transcribe this typicality into his wines.

"A preserved and confidential terroir

"It would be easy to mistake this for a Northern Rhône wine, due to its salty character and raw meat. But with a little aeration, notes of ripe plum and violet also emerge. Concentrated, with a multitude of fine tannins wrapped in velvet on the powerful, concentrated palate. The finish is very mineral and tannic. Drink now, but best from 2024." (James Suckling 2022). A racy cuvée you'll love!

"Intense notes of bay, clove and savory, along with deep black cherry and elderberry, make this a unique Julienas. Concentrated, yet very fresh, it has lively acidity and chocolatey tannins that build steadily to a long, compact finish. A cuvée from the Les Chers, Les Crots and Les Capitains terroirs. A wine for laying down. To drink or to keep. (James Suckling 2022).

"Intense, lively color. Aromas of fresh black cherries, blueberries... The wine is concentrated, complex, balanced, long. Superb ageing potential " (Bourgogne Aujourd'hui - April 2019). "Juliénas" "Probus", beautiful Latin resonances that remind us that Gamay first appeared appeared in Beaujolais in Roman times. Roman era. A great Juliénas!

"Made from 70-year-old vines, this cuvée remains imperturbably at the top of the cru. 15,000 wonderful bottles of this Chénas have been produced. Deep garnet-red color, aromas of fresh black fruits and spices... Concentrated, velvety, gourmand and pure on the palate, with a Rhodanian touch and great length. Best score of the tasting 18/20." (Bourgogne Aujourd'hui - April 2020). A racy cuvée you'll love!

"Vinified from whole bunches of grapes, then aged partly in barrel (30%) for twelve months, this cuvée is a tribute to the Roman emperor Probus, who is said to have introduced Gamay to the Beaujolais region. Its balance between fruit and wood, between power and finesse, makes it an outstanding Julienas, with silky tannins and great length". (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2018)
