Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Domain rated (2021 guide) 3*Stars (High-quality production that can serve as a benchmark in its sector)

About the domain :

In 2018 and 2019, Nicolas Grosbois' wines were among the best in their appellation; this Loire talent skillfully farms his 9 hectares of biodynamic Chinon. Those who don't like woody wines will be delighted at the domaine, especially as the cuvées come from the yellow sands of Panzoult: these impart more native suppleness than the clay-limestone. The cuvée gabarre takes its name from the boats that used to ply the river, and boasts expressive tannins with a restrained, peppery finish. The clos-du-noyer has graphite accents that mingle with black fruits, with an intense, well-stretched sap. With prices still wise and accessible, this is a blessed address, highly recommendable.

About the domain :

A former 15th-century fortified farmhouse on the heights of the Chinon hillside. The Grosbois family has been growing vines here since 1850, a long tradition perpetuated since 2008 by Nicolas, who explored the world of wine, both in France and abroad (Chile, Oregon, Australia...) before taking over this 15-hectare vineyard.

Rated (2020 guide) 14.5/20 (Vintage 2018) (Good wine)

Domaine rated (2021 guide) 1*Star (Stars in the making or quality winegrowers with a good level of production, you won't be disappointed when you taste the wines from these estates)

About the domain :

The gentle, homogeneous slopes of the Panzoult commune are mostly composed of millarge, yellow quartz sands on which Cabernet Franc produces chinons that are less tannic than on clay-limestone. "This sunny terroir needs to be dramatized," explains Nicolas Grosbois, who joined the family domaine in 2008 after ten years as a flying winemaker. From New Zealand and Chile, this thirty-something returned inoculated against wood. He vinifies and ages his reds exclusively in vats. His Clos du Noyer cuvée gives priority to the full expression of a tasteful grape, with an emphasis on finesse. Montet, a new creation born on a limestone slab, is one of Chinon's great reds. Nicolas Grosbois is also associate manager at Domaine des Hauts Baigneux (Azay-le-Rideau).

a nice little wine with a charcuterie dish, without fuss or fuss. But not exactly the archetypal Chinon...

That's nice, but for me, a local, it's not Chinon! Go and see Joguet, Alliet, Baudry .... advice from 35 years of tastings!
