"Structure and opulence
"The impact of old vines combines depth and sapidity. The nose is poised, fine, with blackberry, dark chocolate and violet. The palate reconciles richness and tannic elegance. Great ageing potential". (Le Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France 2022 - RVF) These very old vines, handed down from father to son, are like a bequest and are the object of very special attention to offer a cuvée combining structure and opulence with remarkable aromatic concentration. This Beaujolais cru is definitely the star of the region!

Moulin-à-Vent

Bettane & Desseauve
Domaine rated (2021 guide) 4*Stars (Top-quality producers, the glories of French winegrowing)
About the domain :
Since 1937, domaine Paul Janin et fils has been producing moulin-à-vent and beaujolais-villages reds and whites. Eric Janin, the current owner, represents the fourth generation. He has inherited a succession of investments that have made the domaine such a success. In 1937, his grandfather bought the famous Tremblay vineyard, and in 1967, his father acquired what is today the estate's flagship cuvée: the century-old Greneriers vines. Éric Janin is also the father of young Perrine, who is studying oenology, and in turn continues to invest in the long-term future of the estate. In particular, this involves massal selections to gradually renew his stock of old vines. Difficult years are piling up for the cru, and Éric Janin has not escaped the violent hailstorms that have devastated the vineyards over the last three years. In order to preserve what has built the estate's reputation, the range is now completed by purchases from the negociants. Of a more classic standing, these wines are of good quality. As for the estate's stars, they suffer from low quantities but do not disappoint in terms of quality. In 2018, vignes-du-tremblay and greneriers are magnificent successes.

About the domain :
The location and age of the vines aren't everything. It takes the good farming sense and analytical finesse of Éric Janin to produce great Gamays, concentrated and fresh. Since his first harvest in 1983, Éric Janin has maintained a winemaking style that brings out the best in climates located mainly in the Moulin-à-Vent cru. Some vines, such as Les Greneriers, have survived both world wars. In 2017, Éric Janin set up a trading business with partner winemakers. Chénas, Brouilly and Beaujolais-Villages complete his range.

About the wine:
Dark color with violet highlights. Fragrant nose of violet, blackberry, pepper, clove and some fleshy, almost Syrah-like notes. Dense, savory and easily digestible on the palate, with lush black fruits, generous spiciness, well-balanced tannins and acidity that adds relief. Fleshy, muscular, long finish.

On this (finally) well-opened 2019, the old vines offer a Beaujolais of fine constitution and well-adjusted acidity/material balance, with a concentration of beautifully ripe fruit. The juiciness is dense and fleshy, the texture silky and satiny. The structure is tannic and powerful. Consistent length lingers on fine minerality and minty freshness. Capable of facing the next 5 years with ease. Score of 4 due to its optimistic price, even though this is a Beaujolais of fine craftsmanship. Match with veal liver escalopes with pan-fried shallots and vinegar deglaze, with a creamy polenta.
