Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated estate (2021 guide) 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Patrick Carteyron is one of the leaders of the vast Bordeaux appellation. He has made his Château Penin a benchmark in various appellations, colors, and vintages. The family estate has grown from 13 hectares in 1854 to 40 hectares today. The red wines, and in particular the fine vintages, Les Cailloux and Grande Sélection, are produced on stony Quaternary soil, the most noble on the estate. The more common sandy and clay soils are reserved for the production of delicious rosés and clairets. Year after year, clairet remains "the" benchmark for this appellation. Here you will find a wide range of wines at all prices, all focused on fruit, quality tannins and freshness, with charming and generous whites and rosés, and the famous clairet, as mentioned above, with its ever-vibrant fruit, which has made the estate's reputation. The red wines are richly fruity and flattering, notably a Grande Sélection cuvée that is always energetic.

About the estate:

One of the regional appellations' sure bets, with several Favorites its credit. A 50-hectare vineyard established on gravelly soil on the left bank of the Dordogne, opposite Saint-Émilion. Founded by the Carteyron family in 1855, it has been run by Patrick, an oenologist, since 1982.

About wine:

Ranked among the TOP 5 Bordeaux rosés! Located in the village of Génissac, Patrick Carteyron has crafted a delicate rosé. Penin 2022 Rosé offers aromas of red fruits, strawberries, spring flowers, and menthol, followed by a texture that is both juicy and crisp, with a delicate structure and a long, fresh finish.

Rated estate (2023 guide) Selected (Please note that this guide is a ranking and, as such, all the estates listed in it, even those without stars, represent, in our opinion, the excellence of French production.)

About the estate:

Classified as HVE3, this wine is one of the finest examples of Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur. Penin refines its range, drawing closer to limestone and gravel soils, while retaining the finesse of a fruit that appeals to the majority. Under the Natur' label, the estate produces a rosé, a clairet, and a red, shaking up the codes of classic Bordeaux somewhat.
