Champagne Deutz was founded in Aÿ in 1838 by William Deutz and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann, both from Aachen families where they had been born during the First Empire. Young and enterprising, and attracted by the prosperity then reigning in France under King Louis-Philippe, the two immigrants from Napoleonic Prussia (Geldermann, a Champagne salesman, and Deutz, a négociant) opened an office without owning a vineyard. They bought cuvées on laths, already bottled, disgorged, measured and labeled them. The Maison Deutz et Geldermann prospered, and by the time René Deutz and Alfred Geldermann inherited the business from their fathers in the late 1860s, their Champagne sales had been steadily increasing for years.
