Wine rated (2020 guide) 17.5/20 (Reference wine)

Domaine rated (guide 2024) 4*Stars (Top-quality producers, the glories of French winegrowing)

About the wine:

Pure and floral, finely exotic notes, elegant precision, breed and length. Great fine aperitif.

About the domain :

After a final harvest in 2022, which will be remembered as excellent for the quality of the grapes, Michel Davesne hands over the keys to the winery to Caroline Latrive, but the fundamentals of this fine Aÿ house, founded in 1838, remain. Most of the supplies come from within a 30-kilometer radius of Epernay, the three grape varieties are given pride of place, and vinification is carried out in stainless steel vats, as is the storage of reserve wines. The range is well-constructed, except for the non-vintage rosé, which could do with more depth. Enjoy the blanc de blancs, the cuvée Amour, and of course the William Deutz and Hommage à William Deutz.

About the domain :

Originally from Aachen, wine merchants William Deutz and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann founded this prestigious firm in 1838. Long a family-run business, it became part of the Roederer group in 1993. Renowned for its meticulous blends (30 to 40 different crus for its Classic brut), it has 46 hectares of its own vineyards, and sources its wines from within a 30 km radius of the Aÿ grand cru in the Grande Vallée de la Marne. In 2023, Fabrice Rosset, after 26 years as president of the company, has handed over to Marc Hoellinger, while Michel Davesne, who has retired, has handed over the keys to the winery to Caroline Latrive, who joins from Ayala...

Rated (2020 guide) 17.5/20 (Grand vin)

Domaine rated (guide 2024) 2*Stars (These great estates, often endowed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, must be included in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the wine:

Amour obviously plays up the graceful side of Chardonnays, with a comfortable mouthfeel brought by the 2009 vintage.

About the domain :

This veritable house, part of the Rouzaud family (Louis Roederer champagnes), is ploughing its own furrow, imposing the regularity of its range in a well-established, precise and vinous style. In a minor revolution, Marc Hoellinger, who transferred from LVMH, succeeded Fabrice Rosset, who had been at the helm of the house for a quarter-century. The owner of a large Champagne estate, notably in Montagne de Reims, Deutz continues to produce champagnes faithful to their terroir of origin, predominantly Pinot, that are classic, elegant, deep and straightforward. Every year, the house produces a fine Brut Classic, precise and structured, with fine bubbles. A master of black grapes, Deutz also knows how to shine in blanc de blancs with Amour de Deutz, a wine that is both racy and invigorating. As in the previous edition, the rosés are subtle and just right. We're delighted to see that the rest of the range holds its own.
