Rosso Piceno
While the history of Rosso Piceno is centuries old, the Rosso Piceno appellation was first recognized as a DOC (denominazione di origine controllata) in 1965. The Rosso Piceno DOC is recognized only for wines produced in the regions of Ascoli Piceno, Fermo de Macareta and Ancona. Ancona is the capital of the Marche province in central Italy.

As its name suggests, Rosso Piceno is exclusively a red wine made from a blend of two indigenous grape varieties: Montepulciano and Sangiovese. The production area of Rosso Piceno covers almost the entire Marche region. Benefiting from the warm influence of the Adriatic Sea and the protection of the nearby mountains, the Rosso Piceno terroir is ideally suited to the cultivation of these two grape varieties.

This osmosis between the Rosso Piceno terroir and the grape varieties produces wines of the highest quality. The character of each Rosso Piceno wine can also be nuanced by the addition of another authorized grape variety. The excellence of the Rosso Piceno appellation is reflected in many of the wines offered by local winemakers, including Domaine Boccadigabbia.

"Boccadigabbia is one of my favorite Marche estates. In 2009, Rosso Piceno is a solid wine for its price. Sweet black fruits, tobacco flowers, licorice and crushed stone melt together in the glass. This hearty Montepulciano / Sangiovese blend is a great wine well worth its price." (Wine Advocate Feb. 2013 - Robert Parker)
