La Clape
The La Clape appellationAOC Coteaux-du Languedoc, is the very first of the region's 12 recognized terroirs to be awarded the appellation communale in June 2015. Located in the Aude region between Narbonne and Carcassonne, the terroir of La Clape stretches over 15,000 hectares of natural parkland, including 1,000 hectares of AOC Coteaux du Languedoc vines and 625 hectares of AOC La Clape. La Clape extends over 6 communes and today boasts around 30 winegrowers and 4 cooperative wineries.

The La Clape appellation is distinguished by its history, geology and identity. Going back to ancient times, 600 years ago, the Massif de la Clape was called "Insula laci", forming an island bordered by lakes. Today, attached to the mainland, the Massif de La Clape, meaning "heap of pebbles" in Occitan, offers a landscape of contrasts: sea to the east, low alluvial plains to the west, ponds to the south and the Pech Redon mountain towering 214 meters above it all. In 1973, this wild and diverse landscape became a listed nature park, immersing us in a spectacular setting of canyons, garrigue, pinewoods and vineyards, with the sea in the distance.

The region's maritime Mediterranean climate is particularly dry, with almost 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. The proximity of the sea and the numerous winds (thirteen in all, including the tramontane) create conditions that help to keep the vines healthy and prevent disease. The soil alternates between flat stones, red earth, grey or yellow marl, red or green sandstone. All these characteristics make for ideal vine growing, giving the wines a balance between power on the one hand, and freshness and minerality on the other. The La Clape appellation produces a majority of red wines (80%), from blends of the region's traditional grape varieties: grenache, mourvèdre, syrah, carignan and cinsault; and 20% of white wines from bourboulenc, clairette, grenache, picpoul, marsanne, roussanne and rolle.

"This is a very open wine today. The cuvée's classic Mediterranean flavors structure the finish." (Le Guide des Vins Bettane & Desseauve) A blend of Mourvèdre, Syrah and Grenache from old vines. A deep, dense cuvée of incredible concentration, with generous aromas of candied fruit, prunes and garrigue. Ready to enjoy!

" Splendid expression of La Clape with a minty, racy juice and superlative tannins. A rare expression of a rare taste, sappy, powerful, in a vintage unfortunately short of rain that didn't completely relax the tannins and that ageing will refine. What a finish! Wait for it " (Le Guide des Vins Bettane & Desseauve 2020 )

" Another sure bet from the south of France, Languedoc La Clape Classique 2016, which comes from the estate owned by a former Château Lafite-Rothschild winemaker. The blend is 40% Grenache, 40% Syrah and 20% Mourvèdre, aged in concrete vats for 18 months. It is full-bodied, concentrated and with a velvety texture, intense nuances of blueberry, black cherry and plum." (Wine Advocate 2018 - Robert Parker) New from Languedoc!
