The Azores GI can be produced on any of the archipelago's different wine-producing islands. Azorean vines are protected from the wind and sea spray by small enclosures called "currais", made of lava rock.

The Azores ' volcanic terroir ensures good soil drainage and the accumulation of heat needed for ripening.

The Arinto dos Açores (white) grape variety is endemic to these islands.
