The Azores GI can be produced on any of the archipelago's different wine-producing islands. Azorean vines are protected from the wind and sea spray by small enclosures called "currais", made of lava stone.

The volcanic terroir of the Azores ensures good soil drainage and the accumulation of heat necessary for ripening.

The Arinto dos Açores grape (white) is endemic to these islands.
