IGP Seyssuel
4.2/5See the 6 reviews
The Seyssuel vineyard is located in the Rhône Valley. First planted in Roman times, it was abandoned for a long time before being replanted in modern times. The wines produced here can bear the Collines-rhodaniennes appellation. The Seyssuel vineyard is certainly one of the oldest in France, if not Gaul. Indeed, the Romans were already growing vines near Vienne La Romaine. Long deserted due to the difficulty of exploiting steep slopes, this vineyard was revived by a few winegrowers from the Rhône Valley. It's a truly exceptional terroir, benefiting not only from a subsoil as rich as that of the nearby Côtes-Rôties and Condrieu, but also from a very steep slope that amplifies the sunshine and, last but not least, from a narrowing of the Rhône valley that creates an air current that cools the vines at night and brings a great deal of freshness and balance to the wines produced here.
The grape varieties are Syrah for the reds and Viognier for the whites.

90/100 James Suckling
The Romans cultivated their vines like gardeners, and Rome is still renowned for the beauty of its gardens. It's easy to imagine the vineyards of Seyssuel being tended with as much care as the "Gardens of Rome" of the time. This still confidential appellation combines the finesse and beauty of the renowned terroirs of nearby Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu. An IGP worthy of the great Rhône AOPs!
