Domaine Grand Nicolet
Formerly a family of cereal and olive growers with only 1ha of vines, it was Joseph who gave the family the impetus to make wine. Nicolet expanding the vineyard by 2 hectares between 1912 and 1919. A passionate winemaker, he created the " Nicolet "In 1926, Jérôme Bertrand was awarded an honorary diploma. From one generation to the next, the vineyard has grown to reach its current size of 31 hectares, worked by Jérôme Bertrand.
The vineyard comprises 3.5 hectares in the commune of Sablet and 27.5 hectares in the commune of Rasteau. The terroir of Sablet is sandy-limestone, producing fruity, full-bodied wines. The Rasteau terroir is clay-limestone, composed of red and yellow clays with veins of blue marl, producing complex, powerful wines that age well.
  • Only red grape varieties are grown, including Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. The average age of the vineyard is 45 years, with some Grenaches over 80 years old.
  • Wines produced: Vin de Table, Côtes du Rhône, AOC Rasteau - Vin Doux Naturels Rasteau. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted. The grapes are destemmed, pumped over, délestage and pigeage, depending on the type of wine we wish to produce. We monitor fermentation temperatures daily. Cuvaison lasts between 20 and 35 days. For ageing, we use amphorae, concrete vats or barrels, depending on the cuvée.

"A Gem at an affordable price

"The 2019 Rasteau Vieilles Vignes is composed of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre. It has been 80% de-stemmed and aged mainly in concrete tanks. This beauty is well worth seeking out, displaying classic Rasteau fleshy black fruits, as well as notes of roasted herbs, leather and pepper. With age, it shows more freshness and floral notes. It's full-bodied, with ripe tannins and exceptional length." (Jeb Dunnuck 2022)

"A dazzling Rasteau!

"The flagship cuvée is the 2016 Rasteau les Esqueyrons, a blend of 50% concrete-aged Grenache and 50% oak-aged Syrah. The nose is marked by baking spices and smoked meats, framing massive black fruit flavors (plums and black cherries) and adding welcome complexity. Full-bodied, rich and creamy, this extremely ripe, fleshy and intense wine will be enjoyed over the next few years to everyone's delight." (Wine Advocate 2018)
