Château du Cèdre
Château du Cèdre, located in southwestern France, is owned by Pascal and Jean-Marc Verhaeghe. They meticulously vinify and age their wines using proven techniques adapted to the soil and grape varieties. Château du Cèdre produces Malbec wines: fruity wines or wines with good aging potential that explore all the facets of the Cahors terroir.
The three parcels of the Château du Cèdre vineyard are made up of the two best types of soil in the Cahors appellation. The largest plot, covering 12.5 hectares and facing southwest, is located on a constantly shifting cone of limestone scree. The very stony clay-limestone soil is known as "Tran." It plays a very important role in terms of temperature and humidity, and the wines produced on this soil have very fine tannins and are particularly straightforward and long-lasting. The other two plots (5.5 and 7.5 hectares facing south) are composed of predominantly pebbles, mixed with reddish ferruginous sand on the surface and clay and silica deeper down. The wines produced here are more powerful and higher in alcohol. Malbec is a low-yielding grape variety that thrives on poor soils but requires a lot of work. Planted on the great terroirs of Quercy, it produces floral and fruity wines with aromas of violet, red fruits, black fruits, and blackberry, with plenty of body and length. As for Château du Cèdre's Viognier, it has all the qualities required by the terroir to produce a natural wine: it can withstand high temperatures in summer, contrasted by cool nights.
