Domaine Damascene

Damascene Estate
Damascene is a project launched in 2018 by winemaker Jean Smit, who, after gaining experience in vineyards abroad decided to return to South Africa. There, he acquired numerous vineyards around the Cape, of very high quality and some of the oldest planted in South Africa. The wines are vinified at Elgin, where transfers are made exclusively by gravity, and where the vats are designed to keep the marc cap submerged, thus avoiding unnecessary handling and allowing the wine to express itself naturally. The whites are whole-cluster pressed, then fermented and aged in 1,000-liter foudres, while the reds are vinified from whole grapes and mainly aged in 2,000-liter foudres. The philosophy behind Damascene is to tell the story, not of the owners or marketing trends, but of the vineyards themselves.

"Flavor and power in this exceptional South African wine!"

"The 2021 Syrah Swartland comes from predominantly schist soils. The bouquet is more powerful and floral than that of the Stellenbosch, with crushed iris flowers and peonies complementing scents of black plum and white pepper. The medium-bodied palate has more grip than Stellenbosch. It almost resembles a Cornas, with notes of black olive on the saline finish. This is Syrah with guts without compromising its elegance. 2025-2045" (Vinous 2023)

"Highlighting terroir and grape variety in a wine changes everything! Praised by the Wine Advocate!"

"Exceptionally impressive with its floral and herbaceous notes, the Cederberg Syrah 2021 offers a hint of reduction that keeps the expression in a tight frame. Medium-bodied, it has a certain firmness on the palate that will need a little more time to relax. If you drink it young, enjoy it with food, and I recommend decanting at least an hour before drinking. This is an absolutely impressive Syrah that exudes a sense of place and varietal character. I can see where he's going with this, and your patience will be rewarded. Well done! 2025-2042" (Robert Parker 2023)

"An aromatic 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, to drink or keep for years!"

"The Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch 2020 has gorgeous oak aromas with fresh red fruit nuances. It's spicy with notes of cranberry skin and pencil shavings. The full-bodied palate offers a firm, rocky minerality that will need another year in bottle to blossom, but has good backbone and is made to last. A great success! 2024-2040" (Robert Parker 2023)
