Julien and Sophie Schaal
In 2011, together with Olivier Biecher, Julien Schaal launched a negoce specializing in grands crus. He was joined in 2013 by his wife Sophie, a Burgundian oenologist trained in Dijon, who fell under the spell of Alsace. The couple then separated their cuvées, with Julien keeping the Grands Crus on one side, and Sophie offering more accessible wines on the other. Julien's wines are mainly made from Riesling, a grape variety he considers better able to convey the typicity of the terroirs classified as Grands Crus. Sophie, on the other hand, is more inclined towards wines for pleasure, gourmet and joyful, which give a warm impression of a "welcome" wine. At the same time, Julien and Sophie Schaal have been trading in South Africa since their first vintage of Chardonnay and Syrah in 2005. This venture enables them to create wines from Chardonnay, a grape variety to which they are particularly attached through their personal histories. But also Syrah and Chenin, with the particularity of trying to make terroir-driven wines in a vineyard unaccustomed to such practices. The result is fine wines that are inevitably influenced by Burgundy, while retaining a South African typicity.

"A great wine in the making (Yves Beck)".

"The bouquet reveals subtle fruity notes with nuances of apricot, vine peach, peppermint and lemongrass. The classic flinty notes are also present, like a foundation, with the aim of ensuring the olfactory backbone. On the palate, the wine adopts a progressive, cautious attitude. It can count on the incisive, structuring character of its acidity, but it hardly wants to hurry. Why should it? It's built to last a few decades. Bitterness also plays a key role in this wine's configuration. It takes the back seat in terms of taste, imparting vigor and enhancing aromatic expression, both in terms of intensity and persistence. The wine knows exactly where it wants to go, but it doesn't yet know how! All the necessary elements are in place to get there, so it logically opts for patience and time". (Yves Beck 2024)

" Gem of the year!"

Sophie made this Riesling with the intention of making it a "welcome" wine, and she succeeded! Thanks to a concentrated nose of tropical fruit, fresh lime and orange blossom, and a palate with notes of citrus, lemon cream and crisp green apple, it offers a lovely, pleasure-filled length enhanced by refreshing acidity.

"Love at first sight for this Pinot Noir!"

A blend of two old vineyards for this Alsace Pinot Noir. Black fruits and a hint of vanilla envelop our nostrils before giving way to a full, supple and structured palate. According to Sophie Schaal, it's a "perfect antidote to the fatigue of a long day"!
