"Rustic in the best sense of the word, it's beautifully crafted! ~ Vinous "

"Clos René 2021 is a gorgeous, old-fashioned wine with layered notes of black fruit, leather, smoke, licorice and spice. Rustic in the best sense of the word, it's beautifully crafted. This is a classic Pomerol in every respect. There's an authenticity here that I find utterly seductive". (Vinous 2023) - Delivery in wooden cases possible for orders of 6 bottles of this wine (depending on country and shipping method selected).

Rated wine (guide 2022) 90-91/100

Domaine rated (2020 guide) 2*Stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more regular and homogeneous than the previous one)

About the domain :

Jean-Marie Garde, president of the Pomerol wine syndicate, also owns Clos René. This estate is located on a 12-hectare sandy-clay terroir, with iron dross in the subsoil. Discreet and elegant, it always proves its worth with age, as the 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec assert themselves and add complexity over the years. Seemingly puny in its youth, clos-rené evolves with distinction and its tannin becomes slender and refined. A bargain for lovers of fine wines. Cellar for at least ten years.

About the domain :

Jean-Marie Garde farms two neighbouring Pomerol crus, with similar terroir and grape varieties (and an original presence of Malbec): Clos René, an old family estate known in the 18th century as "Reney", and Moulinet-Lasserre, complemented by a Lalande vineyard (La Mission).

Rated wine (guide 2024 ) 91/100

About the wine:

Notes of currants, dried herbs, paprika and olives. The black fruits have a fresh, savory quality. Medium-bodied, elegant and linear on the palate. Try it after 2024.

Rated wine (guide 2024 ) 91/100

About the wine:

With a complex perfume of red and black fruits, leather, leafy herbs and smoky tobacco, Clos René 2021 is medium-bodied and rich, with a round, generous texture on the palate, fine tannins and remarkable balance. It's in keeping with the fresher style of the vintage, yet with tremendous depth of fruit. Let it age for 2-4 years and enjoy it over the next decade. 2026-2038

Terre de Vins

Rated wine (guide 2022) 91-92/100

About the wine:

A lovely, fragrant, slightly heady bouquet of candied cherry, underlined by an elegant toastiness. A certain concentration is expected, and this is found on the palate, with a supple body, a lovely acid edge, melted tannins and well-integrated ageing that will become more discreet with age. A harmonious classic.

Note and review by M. MICHEL V. Published on 13/02/2025

Disappointed! Especially as I love this appellation! With a Pomerol it's the 1st time! Tasted on New Year's Eve with 6 guests who all had the same reaction. This wine is too young and the acidity masks the usual Pomerol aromas. It's even unpleasant to drink. I'd planned on 3 bottles and after the 1st we moved on. The other 2 are now at the bottom of the cellar, hoping that with time they will improve. I don't understand how experts can be so complimentary about a wine like this and, above all, say that it can be drunk from 2024. We must not have drunk the same wine, because at the moment it's closer to a "piquette" than a good wine!
