About the estate:

Jean-Marie Garde, president of the Pomerol syndicate, is also the owner of Clos René. This estate is located on 12 hectares of sandy-clay soil with iron-rich subsoil. Discreet and elegant, it always shows itself to its best advantage with age, as the 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec assert themselves and give complexity over the years. Appearing frail in its youth, Clos René evolves with distinction and its tannins become slender and refined. It is a good buy for lovers of fine wine. Keep in the cellar for at least ten years.

Jean-Marie Garde cultivates two vineyards bordering Pomerol, with similar terroir and grape varieties (including the unusual addition of Malbec): Clos René, a former family estate known in the 18th century as "Reney," and Moulinet-Lasserre, complemented by a vineyard in Lalande (La Mission).

Clos René 2021 is a magnificent, old-fashioned wine with layered notes of black fruit, leather, smoke, licorice, and spices. Rustic in the best sense of the word, it is beautifully crafted. It is a classic Pomerol in every respect. There is an authenticity here that I find quite appealing. 2023-2031

It has notes of currants, dried herbs, paprika, and olives. The black fruits are fresh and delicious. It is medium-bodied, elegant, and linear on the palate. Try it after 2024.

A lovely, slightly heady bouquet of candied cherry is underscored by elegant toasted notes. We expect a certain concentration, and it is found on the palate, with a supple texture, a nice acidity, mellow tannins, and well-integrated aging that will become more discreet with time.
