"There are only 2,000 bottles of the 2018 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Vernays, a cuvée from fine, chalky soils. Unfolding in the glass with notes of green pear, wheat toast and beeswax, it's medium- to full-bodied, powerful and muscular, with a racy backbone of acidity and abundant chalky dry extract, finishing with a long, penetrating finish. Well worth seeking out" (Wine Advocate 2019).

Nose

Very mineral, with aromas of wet stone and then toast.

Mouth

Very linear, with a remarkable and unusual tannic structure for a white wine. The palate begins boldly, then quickly evolves towards mineral sensations. The finish is perfectly straightforward and precise. Remarkable length on the palate.

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Domaine rated (2020 guide) 4*Stars (Very high quality producers, the glories of French winegrowing)

About the domain :

The Verget trading house is part of the Guffens-Heynen "trilogy", where Jean-Marie Guffens, supported by his loyal second-in-command Julien Desplans, applies the recipes tried and tested on his elite domaine since the 1980s, which serve as a worldwide benchmark for Chardonnay. The spearhead here remains the Mâconnais, but purchases from the Chablis region are regular and, depending on the vintage, there are some fine cuvées from the Côte de Beaune. Booking en primeur will be all the more judicious as it may provide an opportunity to buy "terroir-less" wines by the capsule, proving that terroir is not always the deciding factor when it comes to quality. Last but not least, this is the address where you can buy Guffens aux Tourettes and Verget du Sud, at unbeatable price-pleasure ratios, reviewed in the Rhône Valley section of this guide. An exemplary address.

Wine rated (guide 2021) 16.5/20 (Very good wine)

Domaine rated (guide 2022) 2*Stars (These great estates, often endowed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, must be included in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the wine:

Les Vernays, harvested in Fuissé, offers a moderate style in its richness, its luxurious oakiness contained by a fresh, mineral frame.

About the domain :

Jean-Marie Guffens has put all his talent and exacting standards into this haute-couture negociant founded in 1990. Julien Desplans, a brilliant oenologist trained at Romanée-Conti, has been the master on board at Verget since 2012. Crowned negociant of the year by the RVF jury in 2020, he is unanimously acclaimed for his unrivalled vinifications, highly specialized sourcing choices and precise pressing and ageing. Let's salute these 2019s of great mastery.
