Expert opinion

Decanter

Decanter

Wine rated (guide 2023) 97/100

About the wine:

Intense, fragrant, ripe, cooked black fruit on the nose. On the palate, the fruit is lively and acidic, with a fairly lively initial acidity before the rich, sunny, ripe strawberries and raspberries come into play, with notes of licorice, toast and cedar giving a spicy edge to the expression, and graphite bringing minerality. It's a powerful wine, no doubt, bordering on hedonistic at times - the result of the hot, dry summer. It's sensual, rich and flashy, but the sense of control and layers of juicy freshness help balance opulence with refinement. Clearly confident and charismatic, lovers of this style will be delighted by Solaia in 2020. Developed by Renzo Cotarella, Stefano Caraneto and Pietro Dogliani. 2027-2045

About the wine:

A torrent of blackberries, blueberries and currants leaps to the nose before giving way to earth and wild fennel. On the palate, the berries remain as exuberant as on the nose, balanced by wild herbs and pepper, with a spicy warmth reminiscent of flaming orange peel in a glass of amaro. The tannins are tight and soft, giving the sensation of biting into the wine. It's hard to argue with this wine.

Vinous A. Galloni

Vinous A. Galloni

Wine rated (guide 2023) 97/100

About the wine:

The Solaia 2020 is a baby. I was expecting a more exuberant wine, but the 2020 is built along more classic lines. Black cherry, plum, gravel, incense, smoke, pencil shavings and spice open up effortlessly. As always, Solaia is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine, but it's a distinctly Italian Cabernet, with plenty of Tuscan acidity and structure on the mid-palate and finish. The 2020 is an excellent example of Antinori's recent change of style. In the past, richness and opulence were qualities of a vintage that would have been amplified in the vineyard and cellar. Today, the aim is to achieve a more balanced expression of this type of vintage, and that's what we're seeing. 2028-2045

Subtle and gorgeous on the nose, with aromas of redcurrant, flowers and light sage that follow through to a full body with ultra-fine tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Extremely refined and balanced. Classy. Best after 2028.

Falstaff

Falstaff

Wine rated (guide 2024 ) 99/100

About the wine:

Deep dark ruby with fine violet highlights. Perfumed, memorable nose, with notes of ripe blackberry, lots of cassis, a little mint, very balanced. Mouth polished and clean, unctuous, very precise, opens with lots of fine tannins, very long finish.
