Expert opinion

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Domain rated 2*Stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more regular and homogeneous than the previous one)

About the domain :

It is one of the largest domains in the Jura, with 65 hectares of vines spread over the Arbois, Côtes du Jura and L'Étoile appellations. The range, which includes numerous cuvées of all types of wine (ouillés, sous voile, crémants, macvin, paille and jaune), with a majority of whites, was reputed to be complete but uneven, with some fine nuggets in the older vintages. The wines have regained a certain unity of quality.

Rated wine (2019 guide) Cited (Successful wine)

About the wine:

Just over 20% of the estate is planted with Savagnin, the grape variety behind this intense golden yellow wine. Powerful, the nose oscillates between mushroom, undergrowth, green apple and walnut. Slightly yeasty, the palate follows the aromatic line of the bouquet with great depth. Its fine acidity will contribute to good cellaring.

Wine rated (2019 guide) 17/20 Coup de Coeur

Domain rated (guide 2023) Selected (We remind you that this guide is a prize list and as such, all the domains that appear in it, even without a star, represent, in our eyes, the excellence of French production).

About the wine:

Depth and intensity are the hallmarks of this highly expressive yellow wine, which also displays an appreciable clarity and tension for the 2011 vintage.

About the domain :

The Arbois appellation owes much to Domaine Rolet. Although over the years it has managed to preserve its own style, combining classic Jura craftsmanship with technical mastery, the domaine has not always achieved homogeneity across its range. Wines characterized by ageing under sail (in particular Arbois yellow wines) are the most consistently successful. In spring 2018, the estate and its vineyards were acquired by the Devillard family, well known for their Burgundy production, along with other shareholders. Under the aegis of Cédric Ducoté the latest vintages show increased stylistic assurance and more consistency, we are delighted.

Corresponds well to the archetypal yellow wine. Delicate, not overly exuberant nose of walnut and curry. On the palate, all the typical attributes of a yellow wine in a strong, very tannic structure. Great length, it can or even should wait a few years and live a long life. All the best.

Used in the recipe for chicken with yellow wine and morels. Easy to make and a delight.
