"Superb value for money for this Chinon with its fruity character and excellent balance."

"A superb bottle born on clay-siliceous plots where Mouton, the horse belonging to René Couly, Jacques' father, used to graze. In the glass, a Chinon with character, very fruity (black fruits, a touch of citrus) and delicately spicy, long, rich and full-bodied on the palate, built on solid tannins." Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Winery rated 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Arnaud, who has been in place for several vintages now, is now solely in charge. Clos-de-l'Olive and Clos-de-l'Echo, the winery's two top wines, are wines for aging that best express their terroir, with the former offering depth and the latter offering power. Don't overlook the "simple" Chinon René-Couly, a beautiful moment of immediate pleasure.

About the estate:

The Couly-Dutheil winery was founded in 1921 by Baptiste Dutheil; today it is run by Jacques Couly-Dutheil and his son Arnaud. With nearly 94 hectares of vineyards, including the prestigious Clos de l'Écho and Clos de l'Olive, a modern winery built into the rock, and impressive 10th-century cellars located beneath the Château de Chinon, it is an integral part of the Chinon wine-growing landscape. An essential reference.

A 2018 full of promise! Round, rich, and supple on the palate... with a finish that brings out the red fruit flavors.

Review and opinion by Mr. MATHIEU W. Published on 08/11/2023

Deep, dark cherry red color with purple at the core. Dark fruit, cooked fruit, plums, blackcurrants, but also caramel and white pepper. Quite an intense nose. On the palate, an explosion of ripe, sun-drenched dark fruit, cassis, blackberries, plums. Nice tannin structure of a silky smooth, polished nature. Lots of substance and lots of fruit, also some spiciness. 15% alc.!!! Lacks some grip, but otherwise a wonderfully beautiful glass of Chinon for a more than reasonable price. Aging potential 6 years+. Score: 16+/20

A pure delight for the taste buds at a very affordable price! More specifically, it is sensual, rich, and full-bodied, reflecting the excellent 2018 vintage. Supported by well-integrated, dense, and extremely fine tannins, it is elegant on the palate with a fleshy, graceful, and velvety texture, releasing abundant fruity flavors combined with peppery and cocoa notes. Overall, it is harmoniously classic, right down to its slightly acidic finish with its disconcerting precision and persistence. It will be difficult to keep it, as it is already a real treat with a guaranteed sweet/salty effect on veal liver escalopes with shallots deglazed with balsamic vinegar, accompanied by creamy polenta with Parmesan cheese. Rating: 4.4.
