Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Winery rated 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Arnaud, who has been in place for several vintages now, is now solely in charge. Clos-de-l'Olive and Clos-de-l'Echo, the winery's two top wines, are wines for aging that best express their terroir, with the former offering depth and the latter offering power. Don't overlook the "simple" Chinon René-Couly, a beautiful moment of immediate pleasure.

Rated estate (2026 guide) 2 stars (Outstanding wine)

About the estate:

The Couly-Dutheil winery was founded in 1921 by Baptiste Dutheil; today it is run by Jacques Couly-Dutheil and his son Arnaud. With nearly 94 hectares of vineyards, including the prestigious Clos de l'Écho and Clos de l'Olive, a modern winery built into the rock, and impressive 10th-century cellars located beneath the Château de Chinon, it is an integral part of the Chinon wine-growing landscape. An essential reference.

About wine:

The Chinon La Baronnie Madeleine 2018 is very intense and aromatic on the nose, with fruity and floral notes revealing aromas of perfectly ripe cherry, stewed blackberry, and blackcurrant. Bottled at 15% alcohol, this is a very rich, round, intense Cabernet Franc, almost port-like, with massive power and tannins that are nevertheless fine and not at all drying. This is a charming Chinon, almost Languedoc-like, which is respectable [...] I am sure that many readers will appreciate this generous, intensely fruity, elegant and somewhat smoky style.

About wine:

The Chinon Baronnie Madeleine 2018 is a full-bodied, powerful wine from two sites located on the clay-limestone plateau of Chinon. It is a warm vintage, so you can expect ripe fruit, succulence, and a good dose of alcohol (14.5%) that adds richness. It retains its red fruit character, but there is also a hint of riper black cherry, along with a peppery note and a hint of greenery. The acidity is surprisingly refreshing given the ripeness of the fruit.

Note and opinion by Mr. GILLES D. Published on 10/09/2024

Particularly rich and generous, La Baronnie offers a beautiful expression of Cabernet Franc, surprising in its freshness and developing a thick, intense juice bursting with ripe, tangy black berries, warm spices, and autumnal nuances. The mellow, enveloping, and silky tannins give off a beautiful volume tinged with smoky notes in the background. Significant aging potential. Impressive value for money. This high-quality Chinon was a hit with a small leg of suckling pig roasted with honey and spices. Rating = 4.3.
