A true Chinon institution, formerly owned by the parents of the great Rabelais, Clos de L'Écho asserts its presence with purity and intensity in this 2019 vintage. This presence is refined by long vatting and gentle tannin extraction. The silky, fine tannins support a Chinon focused on black fruits, very balanced, fleshy and long, with remarkable depth." Bettane & Desseauve
Winery rated 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)
About the estate:
Arnaud, who has been in place for several vintages now, is now solely in charge. Clos-de-l'Olive and Clos-de-l'Echo, the winery's two top wines, are wines for aging that best express their terroir, with the former offering depth and the latter offering power. Don't overlook the "simple" Chinon René-Couly, a beautiful moment of immediate pleasure.

About the estate:
The Couly-Dutheil winery was founded in 1921 by Baptiste Dutheil; today it is run by Jacques Couly-Dutheil and his son Arnaud. With nearly 94 hectares of vineyards, including the prestigious Clos de l'Écho and Clos de l'Olive, a modern winery built into the rock, and impressive 10th-century cellars located beneath the Château de Chinon, it is an integral part of the Chinon wine-growing landscape. An essential reference.
Robert Parker - Wine Advocate
Wine rating (2024 guide) 91/100 (Outstanding wine)
About wine:
The 2019 Chinon Clos de l'Echo, less marked by oak than its 2018 counterpart, offers a bouquet of flowers, dark wild berries, cooked plums, and spices. Medium-bodied to full-bodied, enveloping and round, it is concentrated with structured but elegant tannins that assert themselves in a fleshy fruit core, concluding with a long and imposing finish. It lacks finesse and elegance.
Vinous
Wine rated (2022 guide) 94/100
About wine:
In the heart of Chinon, with one of the best views of the fortress, Clos de l'Echo 2019 offers a concentrated and compact core of black fruit. From the hot, dry season of 2019, it displays abundant ripeness and a sensation of softness on the palate. Lovers of textured wine will be delighted: there is plenty of substance and an almost fleshy sensation, with chalky tannins lining the cheeks. The long, fragrant finish is marked by notes of smoked bacon, violet, exotic spices, tea leaves, and ripe red fruits.
