Gault & Millau

"Balance and freshness have been preserved, resulting in this surprisingly inspired bottle with aromas more bonnezeaux than quarts-de-chaume, which evolve perfectly." (Le Grand Guide des Vins de France 2011 - Bettane & Desseauve). Nothing is missing from this exceptional 2005 vintage vinified with the help of talented oenologist and professor Denis Dubourdieu. Already great and more than promising, this bottle concentrates aromatic complexity, richness and power, while retaining balance and freshness. An incredible vintage full of panache and great ageing potential!

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Wine rated (2011 guide) 16.5/20 (Reference wine)

Domain rated 2*Stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more regular and homogeneous than the previous one)

About the wine:

Balance and freshness have been preserved, resulting in a bottle surprisingly inspired by aromas more bonnezeaux than quarts-de-chaume, which evolves perfectly.

About the domain :

A wine enthusiast, Alain Château is a passionate swallower of terroirs. Since 2005, he has built up an impressive portfolio of vineyards in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley, where he owns three properties: Château de Varennes (7 hectares in Savennières), Château de la Guimonière (19 hectares in Coteaux-du-Layon Chaume, Anjou and Cabernet d'Anjou - including 16 hectares of Chenin) and Château Bellerive, located in the heart of the Quarts-de-Chaume appellation on the left bank of the Loire. These sweet wines combine power, elegance and freshness, and hold their own in their respective appellations. We did not taste the reds.

Domain rated 5*Stars (Outstanding production)

About the domain :

Alain Château, an industrialist with a passion for wine, took over this historic quarts-de-chaume vineyard in 2004. His advisor was Denis Dubourdieu, a renowned Bordeaux oenologist who also owns a Sauternes cru classé. Dazzling in its golden color, this cuvée combines the sweetness of quince and honey with candied fruit aromas. Smooth, fresh and rich, the palate finishes with warm, pleasant impressions. A very fine wine, full of finesse and elegance. Its fullness is gradually appearing. It is better appreciated in 2017 than in 2015! In 2020, the color has evolved to a golden hue.

A sweet blend of exotic fruits (mango, pineapple). I opened one of them for a treat, and the others will age for a few more years.

Disappointing, this bottle lacks tension, a little flat and soft. Nice liquorice richness though.

Full-bodied, powerful wine, still very young, but well-balanced thanks to good acidity. Oxygenation essential. Aromas of quince compote, caramelized apples. Best served with escalope foie gras, parsleyed pasta, tarte tatin. Superb!
