Burmester boasts a rich history dating back to the 18th century. In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash founded Burmester & Nash, a grain trading company, in London. In 1750, in Vila Nova de Gaia, they began exporting port wine to Europe and the British Isles. The family name originates from the village of Moelln, in northern Germany, and derives from the title "Burgomestre", meaning "mayor". At the end of the 18th century, the company was dissolved and Henry Burmester Jr. founded a new Port company, H.Burmester & Sons.
From 1952, the Burmester Gilbert generation - Helmut and Arnold - took over, founding a new Port company in 1962 - Gilberts & Cº. Generation after generation, the Burmesters and Gilberts raise the Burmester name to the highest levels of international quality and recognition.
