François Merlin Estate
It all began in 1987, when François Merlin planted his first vineyard while working as a vineyard worker at Domaine Rostaing. After selling his first AOC Condrieu vintage in 1990, he set up exclusively on his own domaine François Merlin in 1999, before expanding his operation and being joined by his son Laurent in 2013. A wonderful family story for two wine and viticulture enthusiasts. In their vineyards, mostly on very steep slopes, they seek to convey the expression of their terroirs, with a very controlled woodiness, lots of fruit and minerality.

Today, the François Merlin estate enjoys an excellent reputation and a strong presence in the fine Parisian restaurant trade, where sommeliers are particularly fond of its cuvée Jeanraude, which borders (above) Château Grillet.

Domaine François Merlin - Saint-Joseph 2020

The vines, located at the northernmost tip of the Saint-Joseph appellation, are planted with Syrah on sandy soils at an altitude of 300 meters. This Saint-Joseph is a charming wine with an intense ruby color. The nose immediately reveals black cherry, raspberry and violet aromas, with a hint of spice on the finish. The mouthfeel is supple and greedy, with a strong fruitiness.

A large-scale red, named after the Grand-Duc owls, discreet hosts of the small parcel. The wine is rich and aristocratic, with magnificent fruit enhanced by well-marked spices and well-mastered oak. The finish will be sublime after two or three years of cellaring.

Condrieu "Terroirs" is made from grapes grown on four parcels planted with Viognier, the grape variety emblematic of the Condrieu terroir. It's a racy, lively and generous white wine, marked by a beautiful tension on the palate, with rich aromas of apricot and orange honey. Enjoy from aperitif to dessert.

"A wine of mineral fruit

Côte-Rôtie, the most famous cru of the Côtes-du-Rhône, is cultivated on two vertiginous hillsides. The narrow Roman terraces have been "roasting" the grapes since antiquity. The microclimate of Ampuis, a happy combination of southern sunshine and cool Burgundian humidity, produces an exceptional wine. François Merlin had long dreamed of this small parcel of atypical Côte Brune before he succeeded in adding it to the domaine. This Côte-Rôtie is a sensual wine that unfurls its delicate aromas in increments for a long, spectacular finish. A source of pride for the domaine!

voluptuous

From the bluish granite plots adjacent to Château Grillet, Jeanraude delicately intoxicates us. Intense aromas of rose petal jam, white peach and even raspberry perfume this voluptuous, powerful Viognier. Flavors of honey and tangerine are unctuous and voluminous on the palate, and a freshness awakens the mid-palate to perfection. This substantial wine is already delicious and will keep until 2030.
