"This wine is in perfect condition. Tannins and secondary aromas dominate this ripe, leather-textured wine. The fruit is also there: dried red berries and notes of black plum skins. This is a major wine ready to drink, with both ripe aromas and well-balanced fruit." (Wine Enthusiast 2017)

Expert opinion
Bettane & Desseauve
Rated 15.5/20 (Very good wine)
About the wine:
Marketed after long ageing, this 1999 is mature, complex, releasing still-fresh aromas of black fruits and spices, not denying its origins, structured, powerful, virile. Perfect for the table.
Guide des Vins Gault & Millau
Rated 16.5/20 (Very good)
About the wine:
Still frisky, this cuvée combines greedy fruitiness with some tertiary notes. Blackberry and blackcurrant rub shoulders with undergrowth and mushroom. All in a surprisingly fresh, mineral atmosphere, with the wine under tension.
RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Rated (2018 guide) 14.5/20 (Good wine)
Domain rated (guide 2023) Selected (We remind you that this guide is a prize list and as such, all the domains that appear in it, even without a star, represent, in our eyes, the excellence of French production).
About the wine:
Leathery, dense, woody, woody, cocoa clean attack, fleshy, dense and powerful, woody, intense, leather, leather tar, spicy roasted length.
About the domain :
Alain Brumont develops his personality through a style that takes wines from Madiran around the world under the label of Château Montus, which he bought in 1980. Brumont's cuvées often go against conventional wisdom, demonstrating his freedom in interpreting the terroirs' yellow and red clay subsoils, with gradients ranging from 20 to 40%. Tannat expresses itself in the château's three cuvées, Prestige, XL, Montus and La Tyre, and certainly delivers the most spectacular profile of this not-easy-to-handle Pyrenean grape.

EYE: Dark ruby red with hints of tile. NOSE: Powerful aromas of leather, tobacco and dark fruit, with the mark of the barrel. PALATE: Rich and powerful, with black fruits and spices. The wine still has ageing potential

This wine is 19 years old. It is past its prime. A little tannin remains, but the fruit has completely disappeared. It would have been preferable to market it earlier. So, big disappointment (especially at 43€ a bottle...).
