Sophie Schaal - Alsace Pinot Gris 2023
93+/100
Robert Parker
"Beautiful texture!"
"The wine displays ripe, elegant fruit with salty, mineral notes. On the palate, it is a full-bodied, round, and intense Pinot Gris, remarkably textured, with salty notes of finely crushed stones intertwined with fine tannins. It is a warm and generous Pinot Gris, yet precise and stimulating, with a long and intense finish. (Wine Advocate 2025)

About the estate:
Alongside a wine trading venture in South Africa, Julien Schaal set up his Alsatian business in 2011, a highly original venture since it is exclusively based on the purchase of grapes from grand cru vineyards. Currently, nine grands crus are on the menu, representing almost all the different types of soil in the region, and only Riesling is offered, with the exception of a Gewurztraminer from Osterberg and a blend from Altenberg in Bergheim. In a blind tasting, his 2017 wines blew us away. Hats off!

Wine rating (2025 guide) 93+/100 (Outstanding wine)
About wine:
Mainly sourced from Osterberg, the 2023 Pinot Gris d'Alsace was partially fermented on the skins (15%) in Perle as well as in Burgundy barrels, including malolactic fermentation. Aged on fine lees for five to six months, the wine presents ripe, elegant fruit with salty and mineral notes. On the palate, it is a full-bodied, round and intense Pinot Gris, remarkably textured, with salty notes of finely crushed stones intertwined with fine tannins. It is a warm and generous Pinot Gris, yet precise and stimulating with a long and intense finish. 13% alcohol declared. Grainy cork. Tasted in April 2024.
