Clos de la Roilette
Fleurie
Expert opinion
Bettane & Desseauve
3*Star rating (High-quality production, a benchmark in its sector)
About the domain :
A well-situated estate, with seven hectares in the famous Roilette sector, where Fleurie looks out over the windmill, Alain Couderc, like most of the appellation, has not been spared by hail. The wines produced here still have great finesse and velvety texture. Long to open, often austere, they set the tone on the palate with great elegance. The 2016s confirm their lighter but very elegant style. For lovers of fine wines, the wines of La Roilette are not wines of the nose; everything is in the mouth and in the touch. Patience will be rewarded, as the delicacy of these wines wonderfully conceals their great ageing potential. The rare but delicious 2017s confirm the trend.
Guide des Vins Gault & Millau
Estate rated 4*Stars (Very high quality production)
About the domain :
The estate takes its name from its former owner, who in the 1900s wished to pay tribute to his best horse, a resident of a Parisian racing stable. The 13 hectares of Gamay grapes benefit from granitic arena soils, from which Alain Coudert produces several cuvées of Fleurie and Brouilly.

Domaine noté (guide 2022) Recommended (Wine producer recommended by Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate)
About the domain :
As I've written before, in 1967 the Coudert family acquired Fleurie's famous Clos de la Roilette, a neighbor of Moulin-à-Vent and formerly marketed under that name, and Alain has been at the helm since 1991. The soils here are rich in clay and manganese, and this, combined with a classic approach to maceration, produces muscular, structured wines that age very well. Vinified largely with whole bunches and the traditional immersed cap, these are typically deeply colored wines with plenty of fruit and tannin. The 2019 vintage went particularly well, and is the most overtly floral vintage - in the sense that this appellation identifies with perfume and finesse - that Coudert has produced in a decade.

A wine for laying down.
About the domain :
Clos de la Roilette has been in the hands of the Coudert family since 1967, with Alain signing off on his first harvest in 1982. Comprising 14 hectares, the estate expanded in 2005 with the acquisition of a parcel of Brouilly in the village of Saint-Lager. In Fleurie, old vines surround the winery. There are also 3 hectares in the Champagne area, to the southwest of the village. The style of the wines is unadorned. On the program: classic whole-harvest vinification and ageing in used oak barrels. Cuvée Les Griffes du Marquis is aged for twelve months in barrels. These wines are dense and fleshy, with good ageing potential.
