3*Coup de Coeur
Hachette
"With its œil-de-perdrix color, this Clairet has a beautiful effect in the glass. Its aromatic expression is equally charming, with notes of grenadine, passion fruit and ripe black fruit. On the palate, it leaves the impression of roundness, vinosity and structure that we look for in a Clairet". (Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2020) A benchmark for guaranteed pleasure!

Château Penin
Bordeaux Clairet
Expert opinion
Bettane & Desseauve
Domain rated (guide 2021) 2*Stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more regular and homogeneous than the previous one)
About the domain :
Patrick Carteyron is one of the leaders of the gigantic Bordeaux appellation. He has made his Château Penin a benchmark in various appellations, colors and cuvées. The family estate has grown from 13 hectares in 1854 to 40 hectares today. The reds, and especially the fine cuvées, les-cailloux and grande-sélection, are produced on Quaternary stony terroir, the noblest on the estate. The more common sandy and clay terroirs are reserved for the production of delicious rosés and clairets. Year after year, clairet remains the benchmark for this appellation. Here you'll find a wide range of wines at all price points, all focused on fruit, tannin quality and freshness, with a charming, generous white and rosé, and the famous clairet, as we've said, with its ever-brightening fruit, that has made the domaine's reputation. The reds are richly fruity and flattering, including the ever-energetic cuvée grande-sélection.

About the wine:
With its œil-de-perdrix color, this Clairet is a real eye-catcher in the glass. Its aromatic expression is equally charming, with notes of grenadine, passion fruit and ripe black fruit. On the palate, it leaves the impression of roundness, vinosity and structure that we look for in a Clairet.
About the domain :
One of the region's best-known appellations, with several "coups de cœur" to its credit. A 50-hectare cru established on a gravelly terroir on the left bank of the Dordogne, opposite Saint-Émilion. Founded by the Carteyron family in 1855, it has been run since 1982 by Patrick, an oenologist.

Wine rated (2020 guide) 14/20 (Good wine)
Domain rated (guide 2023) Selected (We remind you that this guide is a prize list and as such, all the domains that appear in it, even without a star, represent, in our eyes, the excellence of French production).
About the wine:
A structured approach to this Clairet, with its color, red fruit aromas and pronounced tannins.
About the domain :
Classified HVE3, this cru is one of the finest references in Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur. Penin is refining its range, moving closer to the limestone and gravel soils, while retaining the finesse of fruit that appeals to the widest possible audience. Under the Natur' label, the estate produces a rosé, a clairet and a red, and is somewhat shaking up the codes of classic Bordeaux.

Bue en 06/20. I prefer their Bordeaux rosé, which is more expressive.

Ideal as an aperitif and with grilled meats. Alternative to rosé and fresh Gamay in summer.

The "Clairet" par excellence, a very fine wine combining a gourmet bouquet of red berries, redcurrants, strawberries and even wild berries, with a body balanced between roundness and freshness, and a full-bodied, delicate mouthfeel. An excellent wine for the table.

1 bottle drunk august 2019, quite vinous, fuité redcurrant, raspberry, still a bit young, maybe to wait for next year?
