DISCOVER CLAIRET ON VIDEO!
"One of the appellation's benchmarks. Highly consistent across all vintages, this clairet wins every vote, and here again, pure fruit, breadth and persistence are at work. Predominantly Merlot (90%), this rosé is built around very fresh fruit, cherry and tart red fruits, and a framework that is at once fleshy, greedy and delicate. A total success, to be enjoyed any time of year with cured meats, ratatouille or grilled pork chops". (Guide Hachette - Edition 2025) - From appetizer to dessert, this Clairet is ideal for any occasion!

Château Penin
Bordeaux Clairet
Expert opinion
Bettane & Desseauve
Domaine rated (guide 2021) 2*Stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more regular and homogeneous than the previous one)
About the domain :
Patrick Carteyron is one of the leaders of the gigantic Bordeaux appellation. He has made his Château Penin a benchmark in various appellations, colors and cuvées. The family estate has grown from 13 hectares in 1854 to 40 hectares today. The reds, and particularly the fine cuvées, les-cailloux and grande-sélection, are produced on Quaternary stony terroir, the noblest on the estate. The more common sandy and clay terroirs are reserved for the production of delicious rosés and clairets. Year after year, clairet remains the benchmark for this appellation. Here you'll find a wide range of wines at all price points, all focused on fruit, tannin quality and freshness, with a charming, generous white and rosé, and the famous clairet, as we've said, with its ever-brightening fruit, that has made the domaine's reputation. The reds are richly fruity and flattering, including the ever-energetic cuvée grande-sélection.

About the domain :
One of the best-known regional appellations, with several Favorites wines to its credit. A 50-hectare cru established on a gravelly terroir on the left bank of the Dordogne, opposite Saint-Émilion. Founded by the Carteyron family in 1855, it has been run since 1982 by Patrick, an oenologist.

Domaine noté (guide 2023) Sélectionné (We remind you that this guide is a prize list and as such, all the estates that appear in it, even without a star, represent, in our eyes, the excellence of French production).
About the domain :
Classified HVE3, this cru is one of the finest references in Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur. Penin is refining its range, moving closer to the limestone and gravel soils, while retaining the finesse of fruit that appeals to the widest possible audience. Under the Natur' label, the estate produces a rosé, a clairet and a red, and is somewhat shaking up the codes of classic Bordeaux.

I think it's a difficult vintage, as the wine as a whole remains fairly average. It lacks the liveliness that would give it a higher rating.
