Château Batailley
Pauillac
Expert opinion
Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated (2019 guide) 96/100
Domaine rated (guide 2021) 4*Stars (Top-quality producers, the glories of French winegrowing)
About the wine:
Complete, combining power, aromatic finesse, high maturity but also freshness, very fine tannic extraction, exemplary Bordeaux classicism.
About the domain :
Owned by the Castéja family, and intelligently advised by the late Denis Dubourdieu, the wine has rediscovered the fullness of its style, combining the power it often displayed between 1945 and 1961 with infinitely more purity and aromatic finesse. The wines have progressed spectacularly since the 2000s and represent one of Pauillac's most reliable value-for-money offerings. Since 2015, a second wine, lions-de-batailley, has enabled an even more rigorous selection of the grand vin blend.
Guide Hachette des vins
Domaine noté (guide 2021) Award-winning wines (The wines of this producer are regularly awarded by the guide)
About the domain :
The flagship of Borie Manoux, a venerable trading house founded in 1870 by the Castéja family, one of Pauillac's oldest families, and owner of the cru since 1932. A beautiful 55-hectare unit at the south-western end of the appellation, which owes its name to a battle that took place on these lands in 1453.

Wine rated (2020 guide) 96/100
Domaine rated (guide 2022) 2*Stars (These great estates, often endowed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, must be included in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).
About the wine:
Ultra-classic, with breed, sap and muscle. Carried by sumptuous Cabernets, it possesses great energy, definition and length. A benchmark for this vintage.
About the domain :
Philippe Castéja produces a Pauillac of classic style and form, which has gained considerably in definition and precision in recent years. The wine also ages remarkably well, retaining a profile very typical of the Médoc's great wines, between straightforwardness and precision. Prices remain very affordable. We are delighted by the consistency and excellent level of recent vintages.
James Suckling
Rated wine (guide 2021 ) 95/100
About the wine:
Aromas of blackberry, cocoa, oyster shell, graphite and black tea. Medium-bodied, with firm, tight-grained tannins. The wine is structured, intense, tight and precise. It needs a few years to soften and open up.
Yves Beck
Wine rated (2020 guide) 97/100
About the wine:
What a superb bouquet! Intense, complex and so Pauillac! It combines the characteristics of this region with notes of cedar, graphite and black berries (elderberry, blackberry). On the palate, the wine continues its Pauillac way, with brio. Dense, intense, muscular and fine! Now that's something! The tannins are compact, perfectly integrated and in phase with the lively structure that sustains the finish in terms of both aroma and persistence. What a great wine... certainly one of the best Batailley's I've ever tasted!
