Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Rated 18/20 (Reference wine)

Domaine rated (guide 2022) 4*Stars (Top-quality producers, the glories of French winegrowing)

About the wine:

Intense, elegant, very pure bouquet. Big liqueur supported by good freshness. Very good length, warm return, menthol. In the making.

About the domain :

Silvio Denz has enabled the estate to further refine the quality of its wine and to fulfill its role as ambassador of great Sauternes, in a style that its terroir makes quite similar to Yquem, combining sumptuous texture and fruity aromatic refinement. But he has also extended his efforts to benefit the whole appellation by opening a luxury hotel and a top-class gastronomic restaurant, dedicated to the glory of Sauternes, and generously involving all the neighboring crus in its promotion.

Rated (2019 guide) 94/100 (Outstanding wine)

About the wine:

Lafaurie-Peyraguey 2009, pale to medium gold in color, presents candied citrus and dried tropical fruit with hints of crème brûlée and chamomile with a touch of honey. The palate is fresh, youthful and zippy, finishing with many tropical layers. 2019-2035

Wine rated (2014 guide) 96/100

Domaine rated (guide 2022) 2*Stars (These great estates, often endowed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, must be included in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the wine:

The wine offers a highly digestible balance, with 138g of residual sugar. Director Éric Larramona blended Sauvignons harvested at the beginning of the harvest to bring freshness to his blend without losing the intensity of the year. A winning option!

About the domain :

Swiss businessman Silvio Denz (Château Faugères in Saint-Émilion) has acquired this venerable estate, which for many years was popularized by its former owner, the Maison Cordier. This splendid estate produces great classic Sauternes from very rich harvests, now selecting the first wine more rigorously. It is at this price that the estate achieves the consistent quality that perpetuates its reputation. The grapes are harvested in successive batches, pressed on old vertical presses, and the wine is aged for thirty months in barrels (in batches corresponding to the harvest dates), one third of which is new wood. Lafaurie-Peyraguey is distinguished by the richness of its terroir, in contrast to the finesse of its nearest neighbor, Sigalas-Rabaud.

Vert de Vin

Vert de Vin

Rated wine (2019 guide) 94-95/100 (Jonathan Choukroun Chicheportiche)

About the wine:

The nose is aromatic and spicy, offering power and richness with finesse. Notes of candied Williams pear, candied lemon and, more lightly, kumquat are combined with hints of spice, Timut pepper, white tea, lychee and very fine hints of candied ginger and nutmeg. The palate is fruity, balanced and precise, with a juicy/acidic structure, freshness, racy minerality, elegance, sweetness and depth. On the palate, this wine expresses notes of candied apple, candied Williams pear and, more lightly, kumquat, combined with fine touches of candied lemon, candied green apple, lychee, candied ginger, as well as hints of spice, nutmeg and a discreet hint of fresh hazelnut. Good length and persistence. Imperceptible hint of chocolate on the finish.

Excellent, despite two corks that didn't last the distance and had to be replaced, forcing me to filter the wine.

The + : A cardinal, typical Sauterne. All the expected characteristics are present in a relatively well-balanced whole. The minuses: A little too much sweetness, not contained by the well-dosed bitters. More vivacity and even greater aromatic complexity are needed to merit a fifth star.

A nectar from a sunny vintage. The clean, elegant attack gives way to a full-bodied, fat, rich palate with mellow flavors of exotic fruit, quince and orange zest. Sophisticated, long ageing produces discreet tannins that are nonetheless very fine and full-bodied. The powerful finish is balanced and fresh, with notes of honey, wax and Madagascar vanilla. For Christmas Eve, this tasty, refined 1er cru will live up to its reputation and, at 10°, will magnify whole semi-cooked duck foie gras from the Landes region, with Sarlat truffles. Score = 4.7.
