Bettane & Desseauve

"More than once highly ranked in the guide, this blanc de blancs was unanimously acclaimed this year. It's made from Chardonnays from the 2008 and 2007 harvests, aged for a year in barrel, then cellared for five years. Its deep yellow color is streaked with fine bubbles. The nose combines candied fruit with toasty and vanilla aromas reflecting a stay in the woods. Brioche enriches this palette on a full, ample and elegant palate. A beautiful apogee". Rated 14/20 (Good wine)

Domaine rated (guide 2022) 3*Stars (High-quality production that can serve as a benchmark in its sector)

About the wine:

Based on 2006, this structured cuvée is ideal for a meal.

About the domain :

Located in Cramant, a benchmark terroir for great Chardonnays, this 22-hectare family estate is now in the hands of Jean-Étienne and Jean-Emmanuel Bonnaire. These champagnes are ideal for aperitifs, and are a sure bet in the sector. The siblings also manage Champagnes Paul Clouet, a cousin of the family vineyard since 1992. Some cuvées are aged in wood, and older vintages can be disgorged on request. This is a sure-fire address that is progressing and refining its style.

About the wine:

More than once high on the Guide, this blanc de blancs was unanimously acclaimed this year. The nose combines candied fruit with toasty and vanilla aromas, reflecting the time spent in wood. Brioche enriches this palette on a full, ample and elegant palate. A fine climax.

About the domain :

Like many a Champagne winegrower, the great-grandfather of today's winegrowers became independent of the wine trade in the wake of the 1929 crisis, and began handling his own wines in 1932. Today, the estate covers 25 hectares, mainly in the Côte des Blancs. Since 2012, it has been run by Jean-Emmanuel and Jean-Étienne Bonnaire, sons of Jean-Louis, who passed away in 2015.

Their 22 hectares of vines, mainly made up of Chardonnay, produce grapes for ageing in vats and old barrels (Ver Sacrum and Variance cuvées, aged under cork for over 6 years). All dosage levels have been reduced.

Don't disappoint a memory... But I find that the cuvée variance has a touch of must...

Fine bubbles, brioche notes: an affordable, very well-made blanc de blancs.

A quality wine, with no surprises, which confirms the good impression I had of it at a wedding vin d'honneur from the same source but not the same bottle.

An excellent champagne of character, particularly well-suited to the table thanks to its vinous, even opulent character, and for a more than decent price, with a small reservation concerning the ageing, which somewhat dominates the raw material.

What a disappointment! Heavy, tannic (blanc de blancs?) without fruit or complexity. I want to believe that the test bottle (which remained 3/4 full and ended up in a sauce) was defective...otherwise shame on the Guide Hachette jury!
