"A great vintage!"
Bottled a week before my visit, the 2017 Château-Chalon won me over in the blink of an eye. It immediately catches the eye, offering an expressive and precise aroma of chamomile, dried grass, bread dough, and white almonds. On the palate, this multidimensional wine unfolds in all directions, dazzling with its remarkable sense of harmony despite its power and substance. Readers will note that due to heavy spring frosts, the estate did not produce any Savagnin Côte du Jura in 2017—everything that remained was incorporated into the Château-Chalon. (Vinous 2024)

It is the ideal accompaniment to American-style lobster, poultry in cream sauce, morel mushrooms, haddock, curry dishes, and especially Comté cheese... some even recommend it with dark chocolate...
Bettane & Desseauve
Winery rated 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)
About the estate:
The estate overlooks Château-Chalon, perched on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 450 meters. Jean has passed the baton to his daughter Hélène, who came to take over after a first career as a translator in Brussels, and ensure the smooth running of the 15 hectares. Certified organic since 2013, the wines are among the vineyard's successes, particularly the voile wines, which are the estate's great specialty. The yellow wines (4.5 hectares in Château-Chalon) are aged in magnificent vaulted cellars.

Rated estate (2024 guide) Award-winning wines (This producer's wines are regularly awarded by the guide)
About wine:
Beautiful green highlights accentuate a golden color. Ample and flattering, the nose takes its time to reveal itself. It unfolds very gradually, quietly but surely leading us down the secret path of yellow wine and its aromas of nuts and spices. Full of nuances, the palate is in line with the nose, with (measured) power, (assured) balance, and (infinite) length.
About the estate:
Established in 1985 by Jean Berthet-Bondet, former mayor of Château-Chalon and agricultural engineer, as is his wife. Cultivated according to organic farming principles, the 13 hectares of vineyards and vaulted cellars have been managed by their daughter Hélène since 2018.
Robert Parker - Wine Advocate
Wine rated (2025 guide) 97/100 (Extraordinary wine)
About wine:
The 2017 Château Chalon comes from the first year of recent frosts, which now occur every two or three years (2019, 2021, 2024), unlike in the past when they occurred every 30 years. After the frost, the rest of the season was magnificent and perfect (unlike other years when frost occurred). The wine has a sharp, incisive nose, with notes of peat, iodine, nuts, and morels. It has piercing flavors that are very intense, long, savory, and complex, even for such a young wine. It has an alcohol content of 15.5%. This must be one of Château Chalon's best vintages. They produced 10,000 bottles of this fantastic wine. I also tasted a bottle from 1997, which was magnificent. I think the 2017 will be superb with time.

Wine rating (2026 guide) 96/100 Favorite
Rated estate (2024 guide) 1*Star (Up-and-coming stars or quality winemakers producing good-quality wines; you won't be disappointed when tasting the wines from these estates)
About wine:
In 2017, Château-Chalon beautifully combines power and finesse. A deep, ample, voluble nose, punctuated with peat and fresh leather, a very nice concentration on the palate, tamed by an inspired fresh vein, and what a finish! A work of art...
About the estate:
Chantal and Jean Berthet-Bondet, both agricultural engineers, left the city in 1985 to create this 11-hectare estate, located equally in the Château-Chalon and Côtes du Jura appellations, and certified organic since 2013. Jean's daughter Hélène is now at the helm. The quality is improving in terms of expression and purity of fruit. New vintages and labels for ouillé wines have been cleverly redefined, although the vintages aged under veil remain the undisputed stars of the estate, with a Château-Chalon that could serve as a model for the prestigious appellation.
