Vinho Verde
Legend has it that Vinho Verde wines were the first Portuguese wines to be exported to Europe. In the 16th and 17th centuries, wines from the Minho Valley and Lima were regularly transported to Northern Europe in the same ships that carried cod and other processed products.
Today, the Vinho Verde region in north-west Portugal is one of the world's largest and oldest wine-growing areas. It is home to hundreds of producers who actively contribute to the area's development.

The origin of the name Vinho Verde refers to the natural characteristics of the region, which produces dense, green foliage, but also contributes to the wine's profile with its freshness and lightness. It is to this youthfulness that the name Vinho Verde refers, in contrast to other more complex, full-bodied wines.
Most of the grape varieties grown to produce Vinho Verde wines are indigenous: Alvarinho, Arinto, Avesso, Azal, Loureiro and Trajadura for whites, Espadeiro, Padeiro and Vinhao for reds.
The Vinho Verde appellation of origin (Denominaçao de Origem), formalized in 1959, exists for white, red, rosé and sparkling wines, brandy, Bagaceira marc and red and rosé vinegar.

Regularly acclaimed by industry professionals at national and international competitions, the Vinho Verde has changed a great deal over the last few decades. A great deal of investment has been made in viticulture, a new generation of winemakers has arrived and the local industry as a whole has become more professional. Year after year, producers in the Vinho Verde region have come up with innovative, top-quality wines. Fresh and well-balanced, some, like Vinho Verde Alvarinho, have remarkable ageing potential.

"A safe bet

Docil is a balanced, full-bodied vinho verde: Loureiro's vines, planted on granite soils, produce a wine with a very pronounced aromatic profile, with a predominance of fresh floral aromas and crisp acidity. A fine entry into the world of wine!

pretty bottle

"What you'll notice is an edgy wine with fruit that's lifted by the lovely acidity. It's sappy, youthful and energetic. It's a perfect summer white for sipping on a warm-weather terrace. It's very well made, a great value. In its youth, it surpasses itself. That's what you're looking for in a summer white. Drink it very young, whatever the theoretical length." (Wine Advocate 2020)

"It still looks fresh, balanced and sunny, as well as surprisingly full-bodied, but owner Pedro Araujo said it lacked a little acidity. It's not flat, however. It adds perfect balance, classic aromas and pure fruit expression. Yet neither does it resemble one of the spicy, tight Loureiros that Ameal often produces. This is just a baby, and it's a vintage that generally ages well" (Wine Advocate 2019)

(2014 vintage notes)

Produced from Loureiro and Arinto grapes, this Vinho Verde has fine, fruity aromas with floral accents, and is very elegant on the palate. The acidity is balanced and harmonious throughout. It goes very well with starters in general, fish dishes and seafood.
