"A sure bet in the appellation, the Cave de Cairanne is back in top form with its Cuvée Antique, a blend of Grenache (50%), Mourvèdre and Syrah vinified separately after total destemming; 30% of the blend is aged in oak barrels for a year. The result is a deep red wine tending towards black, with a flattering nose of red fruits (cherry, gariguette), a palate no less expressive (truffle, vanilla, Zan) and seductive, round and caressing through the silkiness of its tannins."(Le Guide Hachette des Vins 2016)

About the domain :
Founded in 1929, the Cairanne cooperative is a major player in the region with its two flagship brands, Camille Cayran for the traditional network and Victor Delauze for mass distribution. In 2020, it merged with Cave de Sainte Cécile-les-Vignes to become Cave de Cairanne Camille & Cécilia. It now covers more than 1,100 ha and is expanding its offer with an organic range.

About the domain :
Founded in 1929 in the southern Rhône Valley, the Cairanne cooperative is a model of success. It represents 330 hectares, farmed by fifty-five cooperative members, and produces 13,000 hectolitres of wine. In 2014, however, it sold off its production to supermarkets, with a debt of 8 million euros.
To get this old lady up and running again, the winery hired Denis Crespo as director in 2015. With his intimate knowledge of vines and wine, he has succeeded in convincing the cooperative members that only quality pays, by getting them more involved in wine production. The grapes are harvested when ripe, and the vines are now worked on a plot-by-plot basis. In the cellar, he has brought about a revolution by working the wines with light sulfite levels, including a few cuvées stamped as sulfur-free to enhance tannin quality.
His aim: to achieve better balance. Above all, he has totally rethought the distribution circuit, moving away from the big chains to the short circuit, restaurants and export markets. The wines have taken a huge leap forward in quality. We salute this collective effort, which has produced results that are relevant both for the quality of the wines and the long-term future of the winegrowers.

The quality of wines from the Cave Coopérative de Cairanne is well established. And yet, it never ceases to improve and amaze me, as is the case with this Cuvée Antique from a very good 2012 vintage and with an exceptional RQ/P. On the palate, the wine is silky and velvety, almost creamy, with good density, concentrated, powerful yet fine tannins and, what's more, a remarkable aromatic palette (crushed strawberry, blackberry, candied cherry). Very, very fine work and 2** at the G.H. richly deserved, especially on headless larks...
