Although the estate was founded by Marcel Guigal, it was only when his son took over at the age of 17, after his sudden death, that the estate grew and has continued to produce exceptional wines ever since. The style of Guigal's great wines can be recognized by the characteristic woody taste that defines its finest cuvées. The house of Guigal is known for ageing its wines over a period of two years. This maturation in barrel and then in cask produces velvety, weathered wines, but certain vintages can be more or less woody.Grands crus with character

"At the top of the Côte Rôties, the 2019 Côte Rôtie Château d'Ampuis is still a brilliant wine that, in recent years, has almost rivaled wines from single vineyards. Don't believe me? Put it in a blind range and let me know the results. The 2019 is absolutely brilliant, and I'd compare it to the best vintages of this vintage [...]. Superb aromas of ripe red and black fruits, tapenade, iron with hints of game, meat and flowers come through on the nose, and this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a seamless, structured mouthfeel, gorgeous but substantial tannins, and a great finish. "I think the star of the show in 2020 will be the Côte Rôtie La Landonne 2020, and it's a wine I can't wait to taste in bottle. It's slightly more elegant and supple than the huge 2019, but it has a similar style in its extravagant aromas and flavors of dark fruit, truffle, game, iron and smoked meat. This is a powerful, full-bodied, concentrated Côte Rôtie to forget for 8-10 years, but if you want to taste a truly excellent young La Landonne, this might be it, given its incredible fruit and texture." Refreshing acidity balances the high concentration of flavors, all framed by a firm but polished tannic corset. In short, the 2020 La Turque is a wine of class and precision, endowed with remarkable inner energy and verticality." "The 2020 Côte-Rôtie La Mouline is spectacular, blending orange peel, dried meat, crushed stones, violets, raspberry and cedar with a touch of espresso.
