"The perfect blend of freshness and fruit!

"A juicy, crisp, transparent red with aromas of black cherry, violet, roasted meat and freshly ground black pepper. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Bright and playful, with plenty of freshness and crispness. A very Syrah-like wine with a seductive finish." (James Suckling 2024)

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Domaine rated (guide 2024) 3*Stars (High-quality production that can serve as a benchmark in its sector)

About the domain :

One of the most regular estates in the Crozes appellation for over thirty years, where vines and apricots are grown with the same passion. Julien and David have joined their father Laurent. They farm 50 hectares of vines, mostly located on the rolled pebbles of the Châssis plain, as well as some granitic areas in the north of the appellation and a little in Saint Joseph. Clos-des-Grives, made from nine hectares of lovingly tended vines, has excelled over time in both colors.

Domaine rated (guide 2024) 2*Stars (These great estates, often endowed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, thanks to their consistency and the excellence of their production, must be included in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the domain :

An engaging man, Laurent Combier has revealed the grandeur of the fine terroirs of Crozes-Hermitages, on the clay-limestone plateau with rolled pebbles of Pont-d'Isère. Vintage after vintage, he has constantly improved his wines in terms of finesse and definition, to the point where they can be compared, without blushing, to cuvées from much more prestigious terroirs. His Clos des Grives is one of the most seductive and profound Syrahs in the Rhône. Its ageing potential is remarkable in great vintages. Laurent now works with his sons Julien and David.

It's a little bomb of black and red fruits: ripe, strawberry with hints of violet and a little spice. On the palate, it's easy to drink, smooth and lively at the same time, with well-rounded tannins and a very pleasant freshness. Perfect as an aperitif, but I can also see it going very well with roast white meat!

Note and review by M. GILLES D. Published on 02/09/2024

In a vintage less radiant than 2022, here's a medium-weight Crozes that's still a pleasure to bite into, thanks to its playful, demonstrative profile. From the outset, the bright, devilishly greedy fruit flavors, with a background of spices and an ounce of violet, explode and then flow onto the palate in a dense, soft, almost unctuous texture, carried by a rather surprising acidity that exudes energy and a certain freshness, and is balanced by medium, crisp tannins, slightly peppery on the finish. In true contemporary style, this Crozes was enjoyed in its youthful exuberance - slightly refined and after aeration - with a salad of escarole, dried grison meat, walnuts, Parmesan shavings and fresh, fleshy, sweet Dauphine purple figs, or burrata bruschetta and prosciutto di San Daniel. Rating = 4.
