Bettane & Desseauve

"A Mondeuse to die for! With all the distinction of a great wine, it benefits from an exceptional vintage to unfold its captivating floral bouquet. Clear, racy, and silky, the palate blossoms with finesse on notes of wilted rose. Incredibly easy to drink." (Le Guide des Vins Bettane & Desseauve 2020) An expressive and mature 2018 vintage that further enhances this Mondeuse. Worthy of a great wine!

Wine rated (2020 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2026 guide) 3 stars (High-quality production, serving as a benchmark in its sector)

About wine:

A Mondeuse to die for! With all the distinction of a great wine, it benefits from an exceptional vintage to unfold its captivating floral bouquet. Clear, racy, and silky, the palate blossoms with finesse on notes of wilted rose. Incredibly easy to drink.

About the estate:

Gilles and Christine established their estate in 1990. It gradually expanded during the 1990s and was certified organic in 2002. As a disciple of Michel Grisard, Gilles introduced biodynamic farming, obtaining Demeter certification in 2018. The estate operates like a cooperative, where everyone is committed to doing a good job and making good wine. Four principles: no subsidies, soil worked with animal traction, everything is done by hand, everyone is well paid. Natural wines, more ethereal than ostentatious, with cuvées bearing emblematic labels.

Wine rated (2020 guide) 16/20 (Very good wine)

Rated estate (2026 guide) 3 stars (These represent the excellence of French vineyards. The best terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wine is always a magical moment.)

About wine:

It has a lovely crispness from the fruit, but shows a hint of candied notes from the vintage.

About the estate:

The son of a laborer, Gilles Berlioz is a self-taught and happy winemaker. Trained as a landscaper, he started out in 1990 with 0.8 hectares in the Chignin area, helped by his partner Christine. Today, he has 6.5 hectares, plowed by horse, converted to organic farming in 2005 and then to biodynamic farming in 2020. Anthroposophy is at the heart of the estate. Gilles Berlioz must be the only winemaker in our guide who makes decisions in the vineyard or cellar with his employees and who shares his workforce with two other properties... Hence the rather unique term "shared estate." Of the three children, it is Jeanne, the youngest, who is set to take over the reins. From simple Chignin to Mondeuse, via the exceptional Chignin-Bergeron wines vinified from selected plots, all the wines offer expressions of striking depth of flavor. The wines are aged with biblical simplicity, without wood. Discerning wine lovers snap up these masterfully crafted wines, which are available in very limited quantities. The welcome at the estate is warm. This is an essential destination that has shown the way for an entire region and an entire generation.
