Expert opinion
Bettane & Desseauve
Domain rated (2020 guide) 2*Stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more regular and homogeneous than the previous one)
About the domain :
A classic estate in the appellation, producing solid, tannic Cahors at the price of a certain austerity in the basic wines. The cuvée Expression, made from good vines on the third terrace, is exemplary in its consistency.

About the wine:
Lovely, classic blackcurrant nose with hints of spice and saline. The wine is well made, very solid, with firm tannins.

About the domain :
Legend has it that the boughs of a hundred-year-old oak tree once sheltered the gallant rendezvous of a beautiful Martine. Since 2016, Alain Gayraud has handed over the reins to his children Lise and Benjamin, who have a wealth of experience abroad, to manage this estate with its ancient origins (1883), located on the edge of the Lot-et-Garonne region. The vineyard covers 37.5 hectares, facing due south. A pillar of the Cahors appellation.

Domaine rated (2023 guide) 1*Star (Stars in the making or quality winegrowers with a good level of production, you won't be disappointed when you taste the wines from these estates)
About the wine:
The fruit of Château 2020 confirms that this is the modern Cahors, graceful yet full-bodied, with the added freshness that is the guiding principle of all the estate's cuvées...
About the domain :
The destiny of the Gayraud family estate is now in the hands of Benjamin and Lise, Alain's children. This classic estate delivers wines that are fair, balanced and true to the image of Cahors. The new generation has brought more energy and modernity to the cuvées, which focus on fruit.

About the wine:
This supple, velvety wine is rich in black fruits that have been softened by wood ageing and delicate maceration of the grapes. The wine is full-bodied and generous, and will be ready to drink from 2024.

An entry-level Cahors with a classic, rather sappy style. Candied fruit and, above all, spicy notes, with the patina of long ageing and firm, young tannins, form a coherent whole with a rich body and a slightly acidic, long frame. The lingering energy is marked by bitterness. The wine could become fuller and rounder with time. The fact remains that, despite its low price, "Tradition" didn't leave me with an unforgettable memory, unlike the less austere, more consensual "Tandem". It's a perfect match for traditional, everyday cooking, such as duck sausages browned in a bbq. Rating = 3.6.
