Expert opinion

Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

4-star rated estates (top-quality producers, the glories of French winegrowing)

About the domain :

The spearhead of the Jurançon appellation, this organically and biodynamically farmed estate, embodied by its owner Jean-Marc Grussaute, is a key figure in the appellation. Its best terraces produce an exceptionally rich and subtle wine, at a price that's still affordable. The whole range, both dry and sweet, is of an admirable standard. The fifth star really isn't far off.

Wine rated (guide 2025) 94/100

Domaine rated (guide 2023) 3*Stars (They represent the excellence of the French vineyard. The best terroirs cultivated by the greatest winemakers. Tasting their wines is always a magical experience)

About the wine:

Costa Blanca, with obvious mineral tension and a chalky, iodized, marine, salty taste that accompanies the long, delicious development of the material from start to finish.

About the domain :

"Be the man you need to be": that's how people are brought up in Béarn, and that's what Jean-Marc Grussaute set out to do when, on the death of his father, he took over the farm and its embryonic vineyard, which he has since led to the top. For ten years, he built the foundations of his apprenticeship, gave up rugby, his first passion, and forged a new one for the vine, trying out all the techniques until he went organic, changing sides, networks and contacts. Now a biodynamist, he plants massales, refines his maturities, blends and ages his wines. In the same vein, he is passionate about the great terroirs he spots on the maps: first Clos Joliette, worked for a time with the A Bisto de Nas gang; then Côte Blanche, his revelation. For her, he tamed the slope, secured the hillside, planted and, in just six years, proved the exceptional quality of this terroir.
