"Clémentin de Pape Clément 2019 is a gorgeous second wine that captures all the personality of the Grand Vin in a more approachable profile that will be ready to drink upon release. Bettane & Desseauve

Bettane & Desseauve

Domaine rated (2019 guide) 4*Stars (Very high quality producers, the glories of the French vineyard)

About the domain :

Its name is enough to describe the status this estate has occupied for thirty years. Here, everything verges on perfection: whites and reds are racy and sophisticated.

Decanter

Decanter

Rated wine (guide 2022) 91/100

About the wine:

Blackcurrant, black pepper and milk chocolate on the nose. Shows good definition of cherry, strawberry and raspberry. A little too much acidity, but well done. Fresh and lively, but perhaps not so layered. Fine tannins coat the mouth and support it gently. Still a little oaky at this stage. Tasting potential: 2024 - 2035

Domaine rated (2019 guide) 2*Stars (These great estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, because of their consistency and the excellence of their production, must be included in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).

About the domain :

Bernard Magrez, who also owns Châteaux La Tour Carnet (Haut-Médoc) and Fombrauge (Saint-Émilion), has made this estate his flagship. Nothing is left to chance to produce the finest wine possible. The quest for optimum ripeness, hand de-stemming, luxurious ageing... This is the archetypal luxury Bordeaux, modern, immediately seductive and evolving with great charm. On the other side of the coin, some vintages have gone overboard. Time then sets things right and calms the wine's ardor, as the terroir eventually takes over. However, since the 2012 vintage, we've noticed a change in style, moving towards wines less marked by the sometimes excessive quest for ripeness, and towards less intense ageing, which is clearly evident in our latest tastings, particularly with the 2015 vintage. In small quantities, the estate produces a white (aged partly in ovoid concrete vats) with a delicate muskiness and elegance that place it at the top of the Sauvignon-dominated Graves.

Rated wine (guide 2022) 92/100

About the wine:

A medium-bodied red with blackberry and crushed stone. Aromas of walnut and pine too. Medium-round tannins and a juicy finish. Second wine from Pape Clément. Drink after 2024.

Rated wine (guide 2022) 91/100

About the wine:

A sweet, smoky aromatic profile, with notes of tobacco leaf, espresso, pencil lead and red berries. On the palate, the wine is round, polished, sweet and fruity. There's relief, character and a load of ripe red berries on the finish. Enjoy it while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop. Drink between 2023 and 2034.
