At the same time, in 1996, he began making wine in his father's garage and raising his own wine in the cave dug into the mountain's skirt (beneath the fortified church of San Vicente de la Sonsierra). In 2001, he decided to give the name Bodega Contador to what was soon to become his greatest wine, and would lead him to the highest level in the world, rated twice 100/100 by Robert Parker in 2004 and 2005. The vineyards are located in the Sonsierra around San Vicente, on the best terroirs of the entire appellation. The Sierra Cantabria protects San Vicente de la Sonsierra from the wet, cold winds and their share of Atlantic rain. On this splendid, protected land, Benjamin Romeo's vines are spread over 80 different small plots, all gobelet pruned. Some of these magical plots are reserved exclusively for the mythical Bodega Contador wine, such as El Bombón, El Bosque, La Isla, El Sauco and others.
In the blends created by Benjamin, we find (depending on the wine) mainly berries from clay-limestone soils, but also from "aluvial" gravel, aluvial-limestone or sandy soils.
Tempranillo predominates in the blends, with some red Grenache and sometimes even 1% viura (white grape) in the case of Predicador. The whites are essentially composed of Viura, white Grenache and Malvasia. Benjamin Romeo's wines are all extraordinary, full of finesse, minerality, subtlety and elegance. Racy, grandiose wines.

It's powerful and elegant and, in a way, reminds me of the style of the early vintages of La Cueva de Contador; it's clean and elegant. It has 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.55. It's very young but already drinkable, as the quality of the tannins is very good. I think this is the wine I'd buy from their portfolio if I could only buy one. "Qué Bonito Cacareaba 2012 is an unusual blend of Garnacha Blanca, Malvasia Riojana and Viura vinified and aged for eight months in new French oak barrels. It has a shy nose that requires patience to reveal itself, but your efforts will be rewarded. Well-oaked with notes of yellow plum, a round texture and good acidity, this is a great wine that demonstrates the potential of white Grenache in Rioja.
