Somontano
Somontano is an appellation located at the foot of the Pyrenees, on the Spanish side, in the Huesca region. The production area is divided into three distinct zones: the mountains, the Somontano itself and the plains. Somontano was awarded the Denominación de Origen (DO) in 1984.

As with many Spanish appellations, the spread of phylloxera in France led to a rapid expansion of wine-growing areas in the 19th century, with a corresponding increase in export demand. In the 20th century, this expansion was boosted by the creation of the Somontano Sobarbe regional cooperative and the major business projects of the 1990s.

The Somontano climate is characterized by very cold winters and hot summers, with sudden temperature changes in late spring and autumn. Somontano's white, red and rosé wines are made from some fifteen grape varieties, some foreign and some local, such as Moristel, Tempranillo and Parreleta. The Somontano vineyards cover 4,400 hectares within the appellation zone.

The variety and quality of Somontano wines are particularly well represented by Bodegas Osca, Pirineos, Enate and Irius.

"Tapas", a name that immediately evokes the conviviality that surrounds these appetizers of Spanish origin. This cuvée fulfills its role perfectly. Made from Tempranillo grapes, with a touch of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this Somontano Tapas is very expressive, greedy and flattering on the nose. An entry-level wine recommended for aficionados curious to discover the expression of Somontano's character and diversity... A fun wine where the first glass calls for the second!

The Bodega's reds are generally very expressive, with a strong Spanish and Somontano character... This Crianza is no exception: aromas of ripe fruit, spices, toasty notes, power, ripe tannins and beautiful freshness... It's all there!

Bodegas Enate - Merlot Merlot 2007

Notes : Guia Penin 92/100, RVF 15/20
"We preferred the 2007 Merlot-Merlot, with its nose of prunes, toasty notes, tannic mouth, ripe fruit and well-integrated oak". (RVF Nº 551 - May 2011)

Bodega Enate is a veritable temple to wine and art. The vineyards are farmed ecologically , and great care is taken in ageing the wines, including this 2003 Réserva, a fruity, powerful 100% Cabernet-Sauvignon with a fleshy mouthfeel and ripe tannins, making it the most Spanish of the Reservas de Somontano !
