Barbera d'Asti

Barbera d'Asti
The DOC Barbera d'Asti is an Italian denomination from the Piedmont region, recognized as DOC since January 9, 1970. Only red wines harvested within the production area defined by decree are entitled to the DOC Barbera d'Asti . The authorized vineyards are located in the province of Asti (in 118 communes) and in the province of Alexandria (in 50 communes). The 5,800 hectares of Barbera d'Asti vineyards authorize production of around 180,000 hectoliters a year.

Barbera d'Asti red wine is made to less exacting specifications than Barbera d'Asti superiore, mainly with regard to ageing and alcoholic strength. It is ruby-red in color, becoming garnet-red with age. It has a vinous nose, with a characteristic perfume that becomes fugitive with age. On the palate, Barbera d'Asti is dry, full-bodied but harmonious, pleasant and full-bodied with age. The wine can age for 3 - 7 years, and can be enjoyed with minestrone, game, braised red meats, grilled meats with sauces... This wine is generally lighter than Barbera d'Alba, even though, like Barbera d'Alba, it comes from the Barbera grape variety. As a result, it is often drunk younger. Wines from producers such as Bruno rocca or the Scagliola brothers perfectly exrpand the quality of the Barbera d'Asti grape varieties and terroir.

Claudio Icardi cultivates his estate biodynamically. Tabaren is a wine that opens with notes of cherry and raspberry, with good structure, acidity and ripe tannins. This cuvée is a little delicacy, juicy and fruity!

Cantina Scagliola - Sansi 2004

Sansi" means "San Siro" in Piedmont dialect, the name of the place where the estate's winery is located. This cuvée is a sign of our determination to make a top-of-the-range wine. In Italy, the first attempts at this type of wine are known as "cavallo di battagli": the mount with which one launches oneself, hence the label. Sansi 2004 is richly aromatic, with notes of ripe fruit, cocoa and spices (vanilla), and a long, lingering finish. A very fine bottle!
