Expert opinion
Bettane & Desseauve
Domaine noté (guide 2015) Sélectionné (An estate or house that has won us over with one or more wines from its production, without us being able to give a general opinion on the style of the entire range)
About the domain :
Éric Morgat from Layon produces a savennières from very low yields, picked ripe and aged in wood. He was looking for roundness rather than the incisiveness of chenin, on his organically farmed terroir. Recent vintages have seen a change in style, with more upright wines, and 2010 is a model in the quest for purity. The white Anjou, from a parcel purchased in 2002 in the Pierre Bise sector and planted in 2003 on spilite, produces a litus cuvée with great tension.
RVF - La Revue du Vin de France / Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France
Domaine rated (2016 guide) 2*Stars (These great estates, often blessed with fabulous terroirs, are must-haves which, because of their consistency and the excellence of their production, must be included in the cellars of discerning wine lovers).
About the domain :
Born on the South Bank, Eric Morgat is now anchored in Savennières. He has built up a rare vineyard on precious sites such as Roche-aux-Moines and a splendid hillside replanted with Pierre-Bécherelle. The grapes are harvested from golden Chenins without botrytis, vinified in barrels (20% new), with partial malolactic fermentation. As of 2012, the Fidès cuvée replaces the Enclos, whose original parcel has been enlarged by different terroirs planted since then. The wines achieve a precision and intensity uncommon in Anjou, thanks to the constant questioning of this perfectionist winemaker, who never ceases to refine every detail in order to progress. At the pinnacle of the Savennières appellation, the domaine earned its second star last year.
