Alphonse Mellot - La Moussière
Alphonse Mellot senior is the worthy descendant of an illustrious family of wine merchants. At the end of the 80s, Alphonse Mellot took a decisive turn and created Domaine La Moussière, in the Sancerre appellation. Passionate and curious, he quickly made it a benchmark, with fresh, refined and perfectly executed cuvées such as La Moussière, Génération, Grands-Champs and La Demoiselle.

The 50-hectare estate, located in the commune of Sancerre in the Loire Valley, is run by the new generation, since Alphonse Mellot père was replaced a few years ago by his son... Alphonse Junior, the nineteenth of the name, and his daughter Emmanuelle. A genius tandem who yield nothing to obtain the best: organic and biodynamic vineyard management, harvesting at optimum maturity, small yields, manual harvesting, precise and rigorous vinification. Since 2005, Alphonse Mellot fils has also managed Domaine des Pénitents in the Côtes de la Charité PGI, just 35 kilometers from the family's Sancerre base. This 18-hectare vineyard, planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on south-facing entroque limestone, is run according to the same quality criteria to deliver two IGP-classified cuvées that have nothing to envy those of the main domaine.

"Superb material that is both powerful and sharp".

"Demoiselle 2021 is a lively, pure style, with flint giving meaning to the whole, while the mid-palate is imbued with a fragrance close to elderflower, pineapple and pear. Pungent and balanced, it is very attractive in its youth for its primary aromas, but it can evolve." (Guide Vinous 2024)

"The estate's flagship cuvée, elegant and crisp".

"La Moussière 2023 is a round, airy wine with pure, limpid fruit. It is finely textured with curved edges, both due to the time spent on the lees (8 months) and a combination of wood, concrete and stainless steel aging. The pure fruit shines through without a trace of oak aroma, allowing the lovely characters of lemon, nettle and fresh pineapple to express themselves. Biodynamic since 1999, everything is harvested by hand". (Guide Vinous 2024)

"The 2018 Sancerre En Grands Champs Rouge presents a deep, dark, pure and intense color, in a slightly perfumed and oxidative nose. On the palate, this is a rich and refreshing red Sancerre, refined and elegant with leathery tones but plenty of finesse and vitality. Fine tannins carry this perfectly ripe, intense Pinot Noir to a good, gourmet finish." (Wine Advocate 2022) A "Haute Couture" red, perfect with a fine piece of Charolais beef, for example!

"A great vintage

"Mellot's 2015 Sancerre Génération XIX has become a stunning Pinot Noir. [...] This 2015 is linear and elegant but also already complex on the nose. The palate is dense and intense, revealing a full-bodied, lush and sweet yet spicy, tangy and refreshing red that shows a silky texture with great mineral energy and intensity packed by very fine tannins, stimulating salts and a long, powerful but also refined finish. Still young, the 2015 promises remarkable ageing potential. This is perhaps one of the most exciting red Sancerre I've tasted to date. The combination of purity, freshness, finesse and masculine power with tension is utterly fascinating." (Wine Advocate 2021)
