Bettane & Desseauve
Rated estate (2020 guide) 1*Star (A serious, recommendable production, in line with what one would expect from its appellation(s))
About the estate:
The arrival of the talented Jean-Philippe Louis as technical director has breathed new life into this sleeping beauty in the Saumur region, where the soil is clay-limestone and the sun shines generously. The 2018 vintage heralds the estate's resurrection, with a red cuvée from old vines offering rich fruitiness. The Clos-des-Oratoriens white wine requires more time to develop. Watch this space!

An orchard of white pome fruits, complemented by citrus and white flowers, on a wonderfully graphite base with beautifully sharp acidity. It has it all: freshness, finesse, and vitality galvanized by beautiful salty notes that coat the palate, before being enhanced by lovely bitter notes in an incredibly thirst-quenching and invigorating crystalline finish. The only downside: an excessive 30% price increase in three years! This simple, refined Muscadet was chosen to highlight the salty flavors of a lunch with fisherman friends at the Tremblade fishing hut, ready to devour a platter of Fines de Claire oysters from Noirmoutier, followed by a hearty and tasty dish of spaghetti alle vongole. Rating = 4.

Lacks depth, a rather unpleasant oily taste, a texture that is nothing special... Disappointing.
