Bettane & Desseauve

Wine rated (2019 guide) 14,5/20 (Good wine)

Rated estate (2020 guide) 2 stars (A serious and recommendable production, but a little more consistent and uniform than the previous one)

About the estate:

Located on the Séoules hill, in the hills above Nice at an altitude of nearly 300 meters, the terraced vineyard benefits from the sea spray that tempers the summer heat. After producing 47 vintages and establishing the reputation and renown of the Bellet appellation, Ghislain de Charnacé sold his 12-hectare vineyard in 2014 to the real estate management company La Française REM (which owns other vineyards). Considerable resources have been invested in restructuring the vineyard, under the leadership, since summer 2018, of Jean de Laître, a talented master craftsman in the field of viticulture, who is also active in the Bordeaux region. An ultra-functional winery at the foot of the old chapel now allows the wine to be made as close as possible to the terroir. A new style is emerging, with the range being reorganized into three levels (entry-level, terroir wines, and exceptional agnès cuvées), promising a bright future for this historic estate. The latest vintages reflect this welcome change.

An exceptional and original wine unlike anything else. Very pleasant, with a good nose and an inimitable taste due to a very distinctive grape variety.

Too much alcohol, roundness, not enough freshness or fruit. Disappointing, but will suit those who add an ice cube.

A surprising wine. Fruity and peppery nose. Disconcerting bitterness, tight, captivating palate with grapefruit notes. Good length. Perfect in summer with cold starters, hot or cold fish. White meats yes, red meats no. Out of the ordinary, I'll buy it again.
