"I've been able to taste the 2012s several times, always awarding them the same notes. The classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape possesses beautiful purity and elegance in a register of black cherry, blackberry, licorice, spice and toasty aromas. Medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced and ripe, with good acidity and lovely tannins, it can be enjoyed any time over the next decade." (Wine Advocate - Robert Parker)

Alain Jaume - Grand Veneur
Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Expert opinion
Bettane & Desseauve
Wine rated (2015 guide) 14.5/20 (Good wine)
Domaine rated (2020 guide) 1*Star (A serious, recommendable production, in line with what one has the right to expect from its appellation(s))
About the wine:
Velvety, warm, coffee notes, alcohol well present, fleshy but simple.
About the domain :
A key figure in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Tavel, Alain Jaume's family runs a top-quality wine merchant business, as well as owning fine vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône. Their main source of pride is the grand-veneur wine, a classic Châteauneuf. Clos de Sixte, the family estate in Tavel, offers a fine image of the cru, while in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the cuvée de vieilles-vignes is one of the appellation's finest wines. The estate's destiny is being brilliantly assured by Alain Jaume's children.

About the domain :
Of Castelpapal origin, Alain Jaume and his sons, Sébastien and Christophe, perpetuate a winegrowing tradition that dates back to 1826. They manage a 155-hectare organic vineyard spread over 4 estates: Grand Veneur in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos de Sixte in Lirac, Ch. Mazane in Vacqueyras, and Dom. la Grangette Saint-Joseph in AOC Côtes-du-Rhône, all complemented by a trading activity. A sure bet.
Guide des Vins Gault & Millau
Rated 16/20 (Very good)
4* star rating (top-quality production)
About the wine:
With its concentrated color and sensual, gourmand nose, this wine hides its game well. The structure is already complex, combining fruity, floral, smoky and spicy notes. Supple and rich on the palate, it tightens to a virile, tannic structure. A wine for laying down.
About the domain :
The Jaume family have been winegrowers "...since Mathieu Jaume decided to cultivate vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 1826". Today, Odile and Alain Jaume and their sons, Christophe and Sébastien, manage a 70-hectare vineyard (Domaine Grand Veneur, Clos de Sixte), which also includes the Lirac and Côtes du Rhône appellations. Grenache noir and Syrah dominate the grape varieties. The estate began the transition to organic farming in 2009.

Cnp 2012 just about right, notwithstanding the reputation of the Grand Veneur estate, of which I am fond of several other cuvées. Lacks personality and complexity. Powerful, bordering on vinous, with a clean, acidic tannic structure and hints of violets. The spring lamb navarin saved the day.
