2*Coup de Coeur

Hachette

"A solid Grenache base (80%), complemented by Syrah and Mourvèdre, makes for an intense wine at every stage of tasting. The color is deep and dark, the nose open and harmonious, with ripe fruit, spices and chocolate. The palate is powerful, fresh and silky, as broad as it is long, built on fine-grained tannins". About the wine:

A solid Grenache base (80%), complemented by Syrah and Mourvèdre, makes for an intense wine at every stage of tasting. Deep, dark color, open, harmonious nose of ripe fruit, spices and chocolate. The palate is powerful, fresh and silky, as broad as it is long, built on fine-grained tannins.

About the domain :

The flagship of the Tavel and Lirac appellations, as well as a leading producer of Châteauneuf and Côtes-du-Rhône, this estate, whose origins date back to the late 18th century, has been run by Pascal Lafond since 1990. Its vast organic vineyard, certified as of 2012, now covers 95 ha in four appellations.

Tasted in 12/23. Still dark red. Nose of gingerbread and red fruit. Good length on the palate.

On a very fine 2014 vintage, this optimally ripe CNP unreservedly delivers its athletic, sappy, rich character. Leaving no room for heaviness, the well-coated, velvety tannins give full expression to a fleshy, chewy texture of jammy fruit and spices, overlapping with notes of bourbon vanilla and light tobacco. Plenty of volume and thickness on the palate, with the dominant Grenache giving a certain finesse that counterbalances the wine's power. Superb, interminable finish, very aromatic and enhanced by a hint of pepper. In my humble opinion, this 2014, as racy as a trotter, has many fine years ahead of it. In any case, it's hard to find a better Q/P Plaisir (€25 in 2017) than this CNP from Famille Lafond, which has disappeared from 1J1V's offer, much to my regret. Cut like a "rock" but very round, it sublimated after 1h of aeration a gibelotte of farm rabbit with chanterelles and fresh tagliatelle. Score = 4.3.
